  • Alright lets break me down

I made a video of some swings dating back to my junior year of HS. I've run into a laudry list of problems, and can see how it has changed (for the worst) over the last 4 years. Some notes-

The first two were of my Junior year. I was pretty much a dead pull hitter, and it showed on my average, and occasionally ran into some timing problems.

The second two was in the Spring of my Senior year. I had gotten away from the tap, and had better timing but was still dead pull. It was more a swing in progress, as I would later move my hands back a few more inches, and discovered the opposite field. My average jumped all the way up to .571 that year, but I have no video of that swing. All I have is a few pictures, which is what the second video is. I had a natural inside stroke, so before anyone says "I got jammed" in the two pictures of the second video, I was working Right-Center, and went that way.

I don't have any good ones of my freshman year in college, wish I did because I eventually switched to an open stance and hit .440 after abandoning the school's "philosophy" on hitting (hit. 190 thier way, after hitting .438 in the fall my way).

Sophmore year is not included as I didn't play because of my shoulder surgery.

The clip of me in the Metrodome is at the start of my junior year, which is when my new problems came in. The 3 clips following were from today.

As you can see, there are several things wrong.
    A) I seem to be loading with the upper body and not the hands, resulting in way way too much "hiding of the hands" (basically the same thing Connor was doing in one clip he posted a while back.
    B) That is causing me to wrap the bat to an excessive amount.
    C) When the hands start rotating, they drop almost straight down, drag through the zone, and are just way messed up.
    D) I am leaning back an excessive amount. This is giving me a large uppercut, further slowing my bat down.

Ideas? Anything else you see? Forgive me for the quality, it's my first one, and the only way to get some of the clips was to record them off of a tv with a digicam.

I will reply on the last three swings off the tee.

I like to start from the bottom up. Feet are too close together for me. When you load your weight goes over your back leg and does not stay on the inside.
    Could use some more posture.

I tell the kids I work with to stick there butt out. They laugh and it helps with posture.

      Second video - swing

I still think the feet are too close together. Weight is over back leg.

Looks like you are hitting off your backside, instead of a good weight shift to the front leg - hip joint.

not sure which video your watching straightleg but he is a front foot hitter. Especially with the tee work. His weight may start back, but thats a non factor, If you watch it again put the arrow on his front hip and watch how far forward his body moves into contact, then go compare it to a few pros. With pros the front leg blocks the forward movement and the arrow ends up about half into the body, with this swing the arrow ends up way behind the body. This will cause you to miss a lot of offspeed pitches for 1, the other and main reason is when you stop the weight from continueing forward you create the body torque, the weight has to go somewhere right, so it is forced into your hips and then into your swing.

thats the first thing I would look at working on, learn how to stop the forward weight transfer at footplant.

I agree. When I used to go back to front, I would "block" as you were saying. I never had problems with curveballs, as I have very good vision and pick up the ball very early, plus was very good at keeping my hands back.. This year I was still recognizing the offspeed well, but my weight just kept going and going, and all I would do is fan at it, like I did in the clip of me at the dome. I included that for a reason, and am glad you caught that.

I could see it the offspeed coming, but just kept on going right through it, and usually missed it.

Any recommendations on how to stop that? Since yesterday I have cleaned up the leaning back issue, but my hand path is still FUBAR'd, and still wrapping. My coach is saying I cock my bottom hand, which would explain my hands raising and wrapping during load, any suggestions there?

Is this one of those infamous "post-midnight" games they play in the Metrodome? What school were you playing for in the Metrodome game?

Here's the article I was thinking about when I said "infamous post-midnight" baseball games at the Metrodome...

Maybe try lowering the back elbow and starting hands right behind your neck? Thats what I would probably do because it seems like they start about in what should be your launch position and go behind you. Thats the only thing I really picked up.

No we got lucky, we played around 10 or 11am the first day, and in the late afternoon the second day. I've heard all about the "post midnight" games, and wish I could have played in them. That would be an experience. Much better than what we did at my last school, we got saddled with the 6am openers both years in a row.

                  And I play(ed) for Graceland.

Just a couple of amateur ideas...face a wall in your preset position, and work on loading the hands more or less straight back along the wall line, not so inside, and then start the swing back along the same line.
Knee-drill(back knee down)-either soft toss or tee-feel what the hands are doing. Hand path looks straight down and then straight up.
Hight-tee-tee about chest height. Can't go steep or you hit the tee.

Like I said, just a dad, but if the handpath is wrong, you won't make good cotact no matter what the lower body does.

I looked again yes i see what you are saying.

What i was looking at is when his load went back ,it going over top the back leg.

The swing I teach is feet farther apart, keep knees inside of feet. The weight back and weight forward staying between the inside of the legs.

Not going over top the back leg or front leg.

I also think the feet farther apart would help with not going to far linear as you both talked about.
