  • MarkH - high tee drill for improving hand path

Not to long ago MarkH posted a high-tee drill to help correct a hitter’s tendency of dropping their hands when initiating their swing.

I wanted to say thank you for that post and acknowledge that we’ve had some success using that drill.

In case anyone missed it, I’ve copied Mark’s instruction below.

“The high tee idea can be used for hand dropping prior to or at iniation of the swing since they can't push down the hands and still hit the ball approximately on a line or SLIGHTLY up with the shoulder high tee if the do that. Once they get the feel of the mistake they are making slowly move the tee down changing only the tilt toward the plate to set swing plane always ready to back up, temporarily, to the level of last known competence. I agree with Chris in that I don't teach kids to swing at this pitch, with one caveat, but I have used the high tee drill as a temporary means to an end.”

    p.s.
This year I joined our local high school coaching staff as the Varsity hitting instructor. Our students perform a set of drills put together by Dr. Chris Yeager. Students perform these drills 6 days/week prior to hitting in the cages, live hitting and games. Historically our high school has performed dismally, finishing in the bottom of their conference. This year that all changed. We placed second in our conference and have our first home playoff game tonight, which is a first in out school’s history.

We owe a great deal of thanks to the assistance provided by Dr. Chris Yeager and greatly appreciate his sharing of information.

We also appreciate many of the posters here for their constructive assistance, especially BoardMember,, Jbooth and many others.

There’s a lot of good information in this forum if you have the ability to filter out what is effective.

    Thank you everybody!

congrats on helping those kids get some great memories.

One of my students hit the game winning RBI with bases loaded in the extra inning bottem of the 8th to send his team to State for the first time in school history. It was a really cool moment to be a part of. His dad broke into tears. They interviewed the kid after the game and the paper quoted him as saying I will remember this the rest of my life. Cool sh.t.....

So did you get their attention when you could drive line drives off the high tee and they couldn't?

FFS and CallyJr. - congrats to you both. FFS, I'm betting the hardest part is biting your tongue and not saying "I told you so" to the old traditionalists who thought that Charley Lau was the newest thing in hitting. And Cally, nothing like that big gamewinning RBI knock to make it all worth while. I'm hoping that the kid carries that confidence to all of his future endeavors -- baseball and otherwise.

And I appreciate your reminder about Mark's high tee drill. It was one of the first drills I read about when I started logging on here about three years ago and getting serious about coaching. Something about that drill really helped turn the light bulb on for me about what good hitting was about ... and that it could be relatively simple.
sigpicIt's not whether you fall -- everyone does -- but how you come out of the fall that counts.
