  • drifting on fly balls

i'm an ok outfielder for an old guy(50) but i get in trouble sometimes on real high fly balls. i catch most balls and can even drop step and go back on a liner pretty good but tonight i had an embarrassing drop in our softball league. i play left. it was a little windy but not too bad. the ball was hit high and deep. i moved back and thought i had a good bead on it but as it came down,it just kept going back. i felt as if i was floating to the ball and i never got a glove on it. should i have taken my eye off it for a sec and picked it back up? what did i do wrong and how do i prevent it?

Does this happen to you often? If not, I'd make sure you are approaching fly balls with some movement back as you make a judgment on the fly ball.
