  • I Said Uncle

    I couldn't keep up.

Met with Steve E for 6 hours on the field, just me and him until Mark H came for the last hour. Then another couple hours in the restaurant. Where Mark H pulled out his laptop and tried to show the softball playing waitress how to hit. I thought I was possessed........"possession" is much bigger in Texas.

I can't keep up with him. This short fat body is, well.........short and fat.

At least he didn't make fun of it.........to my face.

I could do a few things but the fence drills put me over. Is there a Doctor near this hotel?

    Great stuff. Great time. Incredible.

I got the glue that holds the parts together.....the "glue" that creates the "one move" swing. Now, I get a week with Brandon to see if we can "glue" him together.

Do they make glue in Connecticut?

It's a special kind of glue. Starts with extreme knowledge and understanding and is combined with relentless timely effort to make sure the points are made.

A very very special kind of teacher is this guy.

    DMac

I got to witness the one arm swing that drives the ball over 250 feet............remember?

    Richard:

Steve being Steve (I mean Cletus), I get. Been there, done that.

And he never makes fun of us old fat guys - so far as we know. I do have a vision of him in some "Star Wars" bar someplace, sitting around w/ the other genetic freaks and laughing at the "ordinary" guys. "You should see Teacherman try to load the scapular region". . .[snicker]. "So I'm out in California the other day, and SSarge tries to demonstrate a Dixon whip". . .[roar of laughter].

Mark proseletyzing the waitress is pretty hard core. If she is any good, a certain North Texas college coach has probably already gotten a call.

Bet it wasn't the top arm.

A VERY good test, BTW. If you can't create great force using just the bottom hand, you don't know how to rotate yet.

May well be able to stride, though, and I'm NOT being sarcastic. Just an observation.

    Regards,

    Scott

Well she brought it up when she heard Teacherman discussing his son's double with him on the cell. So I asked her if she had heard a lot of hitting advice over the years and what was the goofiest thing she had ever heard. She answered someone told her to swing like a baseball player was the goofiest advice she ever heard. She reckoned she pushes her hands straight at the ball in a downward motion and hits a lot of home runs. Out came the laptop. Looked at Fernandez, Benyi, Smith, Rivera, a few others and then finally Pujols. She agreed, these hitters did not do what she described as the way she hit. Then she claimed she had work to do and made a desperate break for the other end of the restaurant.

I thought seeing Steve demonstrate this stuff in the middle of a restaurant was pretty cool. Wish I was there for the laptop show. Damn good stuff. Thanks for sharing your experience.

The Hanson Doctrine is alive and well.

I think she said "the softball swing is different that the baseball swing" to the wrong table........don't ya think?

It was great fun. Nice meeting you Mark.

Hate it that I didn't see it. Hate it that I missed the "eye contact" as he gets up from the slide and looks at me with a small "family only detected" thumbs up. But, the pride in his voice on the phone was special. Then Steve talked to him which I'm sure he got a kick out of. Thanks, Steve.

But........ he said it almost hit the wall in the air to left center.

            That's oppo buster.

You son can get inside the ball. He is a natural one planer like you with a bat barrel awareness. If he would coil his hips, transfer weight , and explode he would hit it over the fence.

                Genius at work, folks.

Three years ago he couldn't hit the ball off a Tee.

Two years ago he starting spraying a few hits.

                Last year he hit .403.

So far this year, 1 for 4 with a double..........in college.

Yet, this genius says he doesn't use his hips.

I would say, he's learning. And, will be even better in another year.

His best attribute is.....whatever he generates and however he does it (even though not yet efficient) is from the middle.

When you find "the middle", buster, your advice will have value.

Starting at age 15 and playing in college is EXTREMELY rare.

That is WAY too late to start.

It is unusual enough that when it happens, an observer HAS to look at WHY it happened. What was unusual about the hitter, learning environment, and instruction to allow this success?

With all respect to Brandon - and I have a LOT, for what he has accomplished - there is nothing unusual about him as a hitter.

The ONLY way such a short learning curve could have worked is because the trial and error process was accelerated, and few instructional mistakes were made.

I would say this speaks well of Teacherman as an instructor. And I would add that maybe, he and Brandon got a little lucky. That's a part of it, too. But I also just flat out KNOW there wasn't time for many false steps.

                    Congrats, Brandon.

                    Best regards,

                    Scott

Then it would not be my advice.

If it was your updated understanding and it came out of your mouth, whose advice WOULD it be?

                          Uncle, LOL

Knew you'd have a great experience. Thx again for your stuff. Don't suppose you happened to say howdy for me? Understand if you didn't. Since you stated you were in a restaurant, I guess you also discovered that the man is equally adept at eating.

I'm coming to Houston this summer! I can't wait to spend some time with Steve.

I would appreciate any training advise. Which energy drinks do you like? I was thinking about sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber for a week before my visit. I would take sudafed but it makes me goofy!

Energy Drinks!!! That may be my specialty!

Honestly, if you're gonna spend the money, get the value, My favorites are "RockStar" "El Popo" and "Kronik" are high on my list for actually gettin stuff in there thats worth the dollars. If "US Energy" is still out there that's good. And how could i forget Sobe's "No Fear" both the red and gold cans.

Taste varys wildly, Sobe's are fruity as well as El Popo, while the others are more unique. And as far as taste goes, i dislike Monster the most, although it seems to have some decent stuff in it, and I really enjoy "Full Throttle" but there isn't much to warrant the cost beyond a normal soda and a crappy B-Vitamin.

                              Any other questions???
