Here is ARods's bat position just before he fires to this ball. I must not understand what you are saying
    .

Click back if you can until the bat is at it's most vertical point. He never makes it fully vertical.

Or go back to clip and watch just the hands work from side by side to almost stacked and turn back over.

Then watch just the elbow action that supports it. Lead elbow down and rear up the the reverse..lead elbow up into pitch plane and the rear slotting.

This is creating the hand torque that allows him to throw that barrel into that running FB up

Do you get the Ofher impression that he found the postural alignment to that location and rotated through or do you think he threw his hands through the center of that ball in a hopelessly BAD location

Right after spring break...he would be flanked by the Gulf of Mexico, many girls, and sitting on a cooler with "Gatoraid" about now.

He doesn't go to the cage on spring break. We hope to come back with rested arms and all that out of their system.....well it will take a few days to get it all out of their system

How about some before and after clips of hitters you have trained illustrating what you describe here?

The coaches always yelling "keep you back elbow up" are right, but probably don't know why.

    Very true..very true

You should keep you elbow from coming down without the knob of the bat changing directions at the same time..if this happens, the folks on this sight refer to it as "slotting" your elbow too soon.
Ortiz barrel in front of helmet as elbow slots

relative hand position can control this.

In my experience, hitters with their hands lower and elbow lower tend to have trouble with the good fastball in the upper part of the zone. Many professional hitters use the term "Drop the head on it". Meaning start with your hands a little higher and just drop the bat head on the ball. If you start to low a good heater will beat you more often than not. IME.

These guys are pretty high with their rear elbow.

I am learning a bunch from this site and I appreciate yours and others feedback. Thanks!

THe high rear elbow slotting jumps starts the barrel into rotation around the hands and the lead hand pulls the handle opposite as it connects enhancing the handle torque.

Um.......I haven't posted a clip in this thread. Sorry.

The clips I posted rather soundly disproved your "lead elbow against the body" theory though.

High elbow IF YOUR WANT OR ARE WILLING TO LOOK AT WHAT IS HAPPENING is accompanied by barrel movement to vertical. There is a plane change. This creates hand torque on the handle when the lead elbow goes up and the rear slots. The high elbow has more energy coming down and this energy is converted to shoulder rotation just as stride momentum is converted to hip rotation. THe high rear elbow slotting jumps starts the barrel into rotation around the hands and the lead hand pulls the handle opposite as it connects enhancing the handle torque.

It is a proven " no brainer"..The people that don't see it have no brains

You must look at the frontal view to see what the high elbow does to the barrel and relative hand and elbow positions. Ohfer post the first base view and give you an intentionally dishonest version of what is happening. From that view he dismisses the reality.

see the front view..clips clips clips clips clips clips clips

If you can keep saying this, it tells you you are still growing in knowledge. I get worried I will stop being able to say "I wish I knew then what I know now."

Gem - thanks for the clip of Arod with the back elbow.

I guess my point was I remember Ted Williams saying something to the fact that why start with your hands high if you have to bring them back down to hit the ball. Ted kept his hands very low. In the case of the rear elbow we know it needs to at some point come down to make sure we stay inside the ball on our swing. We also know about all of the "coaches" out there who yell at their kids "get your elbow up"!

Question - would it therefore make sense to not bring it up too high as in your clip and the one of Arod? Is there an advantage to it being high?

What I really like about your swing is that when you "rotate" "load up" your shoulders turn and your hands go with them - the hands do not go back by themselves which we see so often in young kids. I think if you could teach kids this part of your swing - I made my 11 year old watch it 50 times - they would be on the right path.

I am learning a bunch from this site and I appreciate yours and others feedback. Thanks!

    Elbow starting

Does this mean the hips don't start the swing?
Not really, I have seen a few that lower their elbow and then keep the hands back. That is why I would like to see a side view.

Usually the hips and lowering start at the same time. I have a good clip of A-Rod from the back showing the hips starting and the elbow lowering while keeping the hands back.

    Hi Dave- First one?
I am at the point in my life where my youngest son, a player I coached through HS, went on to college and returned this year as an assitant coach. I thought I had a blast coaching him. Coaching with him is even more fun!

Do what ever you gotta do to enjoy him! He must have his mother's good looks!
