Mark, Cletus, some of the other guys in Houston:

If Bagwell calls it quits, is he HOF?

Can be tough for a 1B, because defense is not a big component (typically).

But I'd say yes, based on .297/449/1529, and (I believe) the only 1B in history w/ 200 HR and 200 SB.

    Thoughts?

    Regards,

    Scott

Was reading in the Houston paper today that some well known stats guru I'd never heard of thinks Bagwell and Biggio are in the top 50 players of all time? I wouldn't know about that but Bagwell played the position defensively like no one I've ever seen and Biggio has been amazing going from catcher to 2nd to outfield and back. What a talent.

Was going to say the paper but was the Astros web-site that had an interview with Ausmus, Baggys running pal - he seems to think it's the end of the line for Bags as well.
Another note about Bagwell. He began his career as a third baseman (as did Gonzo) - to break into the show they couldn't bump Caminiti from the spot, so the rest is history (Bagwell to 1st, Luis to OF).

That's probably a bit further than I'd be willing to go, but I've seen people rank Biggio as high as the 16th best player in baseball history, and Bagwell as high as 27th all time.

Anywhere in that zip code would seem qualified for HOF.

No doubt, that is the high-rent district.
