  • 2 in the pinky

One of the guys that my son was taking lessons from told us that most upper level players wear their glove with 2 fingers in the pinky slot. I can't remember why he said that they do it, but I tried it out and it felt pretty good. Is it to make a bigger pocket? It made squeezing a brand new glove a whole lot easier. It makes the glove fit further off the hand, which I don't know if that's good or bad, but again, it felt good.

    Anyone know about this?

After posting this, I did some digging around on the internet and found an old thread and a few other answers. For those of you new to this topic, here's the summary as I understand it:

    pros:
    1. makes a deeper pocket
    2. makes glove "longer"

    cons:
    1. leaves bottom of the palm exposed

For me doing it was survival..my kid lights it up into the 90's, getting my palm and the inside portion of my glove hand middle finger stung by a million bee's each time I caught him just a little off (His sinker is murder..and his cutter can make you weep, just those last second jinks and the ball doesn't hit solidly in the pocket..oww brother!!).

Around 1959 I had a neighbor who was one of the best FBSB pitchers in the Ohio Valley, and I spent a lot of time going to his games and playing catch with him, with a SB. He and the other guys who played SB all did that in order to make the pocket bigger for a SB. When my dad bought me a new(at the time) Curt Simmons glove, the 1st time I stuck my hand in it, that’s how I did it, that’s how I used it then, and that’s how I use it now whenever I pick it up.
The pitcher who’s afraid to throw strikes, will soon be standing in the shower with the hitter who's afraid to swing.

Most MLB outfielders have two in the pinky (aka "Claw grip" or "Vulcan) due to the extra length as previously mentioned and closing power. Most infielders do not, as the heel of the hand is exposed on every grounder. I've noticed many pitchers going with the claw as well.

I use it mostly for softball, with a 12 3/4 Trap-Eze Web glove (6 finger Rawlings). It's a fastback, so I will switch back to normal for coaching my son's baseball teams. Feels more natural for baseball to me.

If your glove has a pinky loop inside the glove ( Ive never seen a high end glove w/out one and all Mizuno and Rawlings Custom Gloves have them) you have several options.

Pinky in the loop, ring finger out of the loop but both end up in the pinky stall.
Untie the pinky loop, adjust it - making it bigger to accommodate both fingers and re-tie it.
Lay the loop flat and bob finger go into the pinky stall w/out using the loop at all.
Untie the loop and remove it.

              Any more?

My daughter's new softball glove is made for two fingers in the pinky hole. It took some getting used to, but it works well for her.
