  • 1 thing you would work on

My son just turned 10 on Saturday and is playing on a 10U AAA team in our area. Last year he played on a 10U AA team and had alot of fun. The team had great success and so did he. His season at the plate was up and down. So yesterday we spent some time in the cage just swinging a little and getting the rust off. He plays basketball all winter which keeps him pretty busy. We tried to get to the indoor cages about once a month. I would say these swings are pretty good represenation of his swing. I am throwing soft toss from about 10 feet in front of him.

I know he has many things to work on. But if this were your son/student, what is the 1 thing you would work on right now as the season starts.

    Thanks for the constructive feedback!

His shoulders are 'upside down' in the stance, and through the stride/load. Front should be even or down, not up, in the stance. Front should probably go down in the load.

This effects his load, swing plane, everything.

I would add to songtitle's suggestion by saying that the load doesn't appear to be much more than getting his weight over his back foot. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of the torque being created (cocking of the hips).

ST -Thanks. I am guessing this is just something you talk about and work with on the tee. No specific drill for shoulders...

Uncoach - Isnt't that what loading is for, getting your weight over you back foot? He used to coil the bat around his head and coil his hips, and I was told that is not good either. I was lead to believe that loading is just a weight transfer to your back foot to start/enable the swing. I certainly could be missing something.

        Thanks both of you!

His weight is going too far back, and is on the edge of sway.

Your weight should go INTO your back foot, not OVER it.

            mkoehn,

From what I have watched and studied it appears that guys like Harper and Pujols are doing a combination of both. However, I don't really see them with the weight over their back foot, but loaded more on the inside of the rear leg/knee/foot. You don't need much of a hip/shoulder coil and your son can experiment to see what he is comfortable with. I don't really see the load and coil as a process to coil the bat around the head, more to get the front side of the swing internally rotated so you can unload/uncoil and generate more batspeed.

Wait for better and more thought out responses though. Just what I have seen in trying to get my boys a solid swing to start their endeavor.

That is, IMO, the best description I have heard yet.

Every aspect of every sport starts with proper footwork. If the footwork isn't correct, neither is balance throwing off every other aspect of fundamentals.
