  • Scheduling Math Question

I'm running a coach pitch league this year and have to make a schedule. We have 7 teams and each team is required to play 14 regular season games. Anyone know the math formula to compute how many total games need played in the league?

Whatever you do build in some rain days for rescheduling.

    But my fuzzy math says 14 x 7 = 98 games total.

      Wouldn't it be 3.5 x 14 = 49 (or 7 x 7 since each game has two teams playing it)?

I originally thought 98 games as well but then realized the teams wouldn't play themselves and each team will have to play at least 2 teams a 3rd time as well

7 teams, 14 games each = 98 games in the win/loss column at seasons end. Two teams in each of those games so you need to schedule 49 games. Each team plays every other team twice, plus two of those teams a third time.

This would be a schedule I might use.
            Day 1: 1v2 3v4 5v6 7off
            Day 2: 1v3 2v4 5v7 6off
            Day 3: 1v4 2v3 6v7 5off
            Day 4: 1v5 2v6 3v7 4off
            Day 5: 1v6 2v7 4v5 3off
            Day 6: 1v7 3v5 4v6 2off
            Day 7: 2v5 3v6 4v7 1off
            Repeat days 1 through 7.
Repeat days 1 & 2. This gives every team except teams 6 & 7 14 games so the last game of the season would be 6v7 giving every team 14 regular season games.

Yes, you are right! I guess my math migrated to being blind. :cap:

There are schedule makers available online. You can download a sample long enough to make out one season. Search "sports schedule maker."
