I got ask to scorekeep yesterday and think I have the basics...but..
I have a dumb question. Say it's the 3rd inning and the #9 hitter is up. He
gets on base. The #1 hitter will be up.. do i start in a new column or go to the top
of the one I started in?

If you like, you’re welcome to snag a copy of something I wrote some time back to help scorers.
http://www.infosports.com/scorekeepe...or_dummies.pdf If you look at the 2nd page in the “The Score Sheet” section about hallway down, you’ll see pretty much what I’m gonna say here. roof:

The “COLUMNS” are “INNINGS”. You don’t change “COLUMNS” unless the “INNING” changes, or 9 batters have batted. If 9 batters have batted, typically you go to the next “INNING”, then cross out the inning number at the top and change it to the correct inning. Then you do the same for the rest of the innings.

But that’s if you’re using the standard scoring system and a standard scoring book marked in innings. When I wrote my scoring program, I wrote it to keep score using the Project Scoresheet method, and when I print it I print it as the at bats occur, first for one team then the next, and break it into innings. See http://www.infosports.com/scorekeepe...coresheet1.pdf

The number on the left is the number of the at bat in the game, and starts at 1 and continues for every at bat in the game, or for each pinch hitter or runner. I find this format a lot easier to read and a lot more informative. Its also pretty close to the method they use in professional scoring.
The pitcher who’s afraid to throw strikes, will soon be standing in the shower with the hitter who's afraid to swing.

I go to the top of the same column.

            Ok another question..
say I have "Tom" pitching and "Bob" at second base. Tom hits 2nd and Bob hits 4th.
Now say in the third inning I move Bob from second to pitch, does he still bat 4th?

Yes. It doesn't matter what position Bob plays, he'll always bat fourth as long as he's in the defensive line up. Now say "Mike" comes in to play second and Tom is taken out of the game in your scenario, Mike will bat in Tom's spot since that's who came out of the defensive line up when he came in. Mike is replacing the player (Tom) and not the position (2B). I hope that make sense.
