I have an independent youth team and I would like to know what others do for end-of-year evals, what makes you decide whether or not you want a player back and how do you handle the invites for the following season when some may not be invited back? How also then do you handle those you may not want back?

I'd conduct tryouts instead of invtites. Let's see everyone side by side.

I would say it depends on the age and goals of the team. I told my 9U players from last fall they were all invited back this year. As long as the players participate in practices and the parents aren't a pain I don't drop players from the team. To replace players I hand pick them rather than have a tryout. I try to select players I know are passionate about baseball and parents with positive attitudes that will let me coach. I'm not trying to put together a select team, but I do want kids that can all compete at approximately the same level. If you're dealing with an older team or you're trying to put together a Major level team, then you may want to go the route of a tryout.

There is at least one parent issue that does have to do with "commitment." I'm not going to put up with it beyond this year, but I'm not about to look at this kid and verbally cut him, when it's the parent who isn't making the grade.

Unfortunately until the kid becomes an adult the parent and the kid go together.Last edited by Jake Patterson; 06-05-2012, 01:09 PM.
