  • Managing Team Roster year to year

I have an independent youth team and I would like to know what others do for end-of-year evals, what makes you decide whether or not you want a player back and how do you handle the invites for the following season when some may not be invited back? How also then do you handle those you may not want back?

We always factor in "mom hotness" at around 23% of total player evaluation.

I'd conduct tryouts instead of invtites. Let's see everyone side by side.

I'm wondering about just having tryouts, too.

I never had traditional tryouts. A handful of kids were invited to practice with the team as an evaluation. I told kids they were not invited back if they didn't leave voluntarily. After the first season I got a lot of inquiries. I picked the players I wanted. We had great coaches. It's also what happens when you don't play your kid short and lead him off regardless of how he's playing. I passed on a very talented player whose dad said he wanted his son to play for me only if he could be the shortstop. I already had two great shortstops.

I would say it depends on the age and goals of the team. I told my 9U players from last fall they were all invited back this year. As long as the players participate in practices and the parents aren't a pain I don't drop players from the team. To replace players I hand pick them rather than have a tryout. I try to select players I know are passionate about baseball and parents with positive attitudes that will let me coach. I'm not trying to put together a select team, but I do want kids that can all compete at approximately the same level. If you're dealing with an older team or you're trying to put together a Major level team, then you may want to go the route of a tryout.

At this age I would recommend picking a team and sticking with it... Let them leave on their own accord... as long as they commit... replace them as they leave
Any other course... IMHO... makes it about the adult.

I'd like to stick with it. With few exceptions, I did handpick/recruit this team. I like them as a group. There is at least one parent issue that does have to do with "commitment." I'm not going to put up with it beyond this year, but I'm not about to look at this kid and verbally cut him, when it's the parent who isn't making the grade.

Unfortunately until the kid becomes an adult the parent and the kid go together.

                      Yes. It is unfortunate.

There was a very talented 13U player I avoided. I had witnessed the dad's behavior during LL all-stars. Everything that concerned me about this dad turned out to be true when my son beat him out for center on a showcase team. He spent the season trashing my son.
