  • Little League Infield Positioning

We just started All-Star practice for our 12 yr old Little League team. We are trying to work on consistent infield depth depending on situation. I would like to know anyone's thoughts on the different positioning for little league, 60 foot bases.

    Normal Depth
    Double Play Depth

    Ours currently-
    Normal Depth Position
    1st base- 5 x 5 steps
    2nd base-7 x 8 steps
    Shortstop- 7 x 8 steps
    3rd base- 5 x 2-3 steps

    Double Play Depth
    1st base- 5 x 5 steps
    2nd base-5 x 6 steps
    Shortstop- 5 x 6 steps
3rd base- 5 steps even with bag

    Thanks,

    Coach O

I dont think this is something you can use a formula for. Each kid will be quicker, have different instincts, be able to set up at the bag at a different rate. Just make sure they're comfortable enough where they are to get to the bag and set up on a routine ground ball.

I agree with this. As long as you're teaching them to pinch the middle, I think they'll figure out where they need to be. In addition to your own players' abilities, it also depends on the batter you're facing.

What does pinch the middle mean? I've never heard this terminology.

Both the 4 and 6 move closer to 2nd than is typical

Gotcha. I take it that was in reference to positioning for the double play.
