  • How to Score??

We had a situation happen a few times this weekend. We are a 10U travel team: No leaving base until it crosses the plate, 46' Mound, 65' bases. Player on 1st base. Batter lines a very hard line drive to left center field. Center fielder comes up throwing and gets force out at 2nd. Is that a FC? Is that a hit with a force out?

They are only 10 years old, so not the end of the world either way. I fully admit I don't know the rule and do the book for the team. I have been reading as much as I can and reading anything on here that I can. A bunch of us dads had a debate about the right way to score it. Majority came up with FC and you could not give the batter a hit. I thought that sucks, cause he had NO choice to throw to 1st to get the kid out.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    It's an FC.

It's an 8-4 or 6 fielder's choice. While it might seem unfair the at-bat resulted in an out.

            Grab a copy,

The pitcher who’s afraid to throw strikes, will soon be standing in the shower with the hitter who's afraid to swing.

Happens more than you think. Our RF is more of a "deep 2B" than an actual OF.

We threw 3 guys out at 1B from RF in one tourney.

We have the same mindset in LL All-Stars. I don't know what instructional value it has other than [1] keeping OF's aggressive on ground balls to the OF, [2] teaches OF to come up throwing, and [3] teaches all runners to hustle on singles to the OF.

Last year in a 10U TB game, I saw a CF throw a runner out at 1B on a screaming one-hot rocket. For many, if not all, of our players this was the "Oh, so we're playing for keeps now, huh?" moment. In rec league that ball would have gotten past the CF for an easy triple.

Thanks all for the info... It does make sense.

Scorekeeper - Thanks for the PDF, good read.

CircleChange11 - Yep, we throw guys out at 1B from RF too (that one I can score). But have not seen guys from left or center get the FC on the runner from 1st. Good I use an iPad app to score. i can go back in and fix those 3 plays.

                Thanks again....

The force at 2nd even happens in the majors. Usually on a ball that loops into center and looks like it was going to be caught.
