funny experience in a game today

    funny experience in a game today

    Today I was watching two teams of the german highest league. not great level compared to the US but still a nice game to watch.

    The game was a double header.

    Here is the funny thing:
    They had a radar gun and did gun the pitchers. first game both pitchers were throwing around 82-86.

    but then came the second game. the visitors pitcher threw around 87-89. but when the home pitcher pitched they turned the gun off. he was a guy struggling the whole year and he threw very slow. I would guess about 75-78 at best (in one inning the forgot to turn it off in the warmups and he threw an easy 72 or so so I asume he maxed about mid 70s also compared to the other guys.

    This was definitely not coincidence since they did the same thing in the last game too. they obviously did that to protect him.

    Has anyone ever experienced something like this? and would you consider that OK? to me that is a little fishy...
    I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

    As you know speed in and of itself means little.... You see this in the Minors or indy leagues... seldom in the majors.

      yes. I thought that too. they never shut down the gun for jamie moyer. I think sometimes people in baseball are a little over obsessed with velocity.

        You can teach pitches. You can teach a kid to pitch. You can teach him composure. You can teach him command. You can't teach him velocity.

          What you didn’t tell us, was what success the various pitchers had. Did the 87-89 guy completely dominate and the 72 guy have every pitch racked over the fence?

          Without context, velocity really means absolutely nothing.
          The pitcher who’s afraid to throw strikes, will soon be standing in the shower with the hitter who's afraid to swing.

            the slow guy did get knocked around pretty hard. He has an absolutely rediculous pickoff move though. he jumps up with both feet at the same time so it is very hard to pick up and lighting quick. he picked off two guys (never seen that at that level) who were trying to go to second as he started to move. later they barely took a lead.

            the 87-89 guy gave up some hits and 2 runs over 7 innings.

            but I wasn't debating if velocity is good or not but more about the turning off of the gun. seems very strange to me.

              It happens. It's called the home field advantage. Not much different than when the home teams don't mow the grass and then water it heavily just before Barcelona rolls into town .
