According to Dr. Yeager the bottom hand stops and the top hand finishes the swing or throws the barrel.

but there are also people who believe the bottom hand hooks/pulls through contact so that the bat acts like a pendulum. other guys like mankin even believe the hand actively pulls back to create a stronger hinge. I believe yeager is most accurate here.

the worst I think is extending straight forward or pulling around too much. the energy must be in the hands/barrel and not in the lead arm.

Could you actively/purposely make it do something different?

I know when my bottom hand gets hit with a pitch it usually drops the bat, I wince, and the hand moves towards my face so I can examine the damage.

Sometimes my hand flies away from my body in a flinging motion. For some odd reason, my hand thinks if it is flailing around the pain will go away. Plus, if there is a spray of blood it looks cool.

sure. even if you believe in totally passive hands still the timing and degree of trunk rotation determines the hand path.

gonzalez from lag to contact. bottom hand doesn't move, shoulders don't rotate (is basically finished in the lag position when the wrists start to unhinge):

noon: can you give me the cabrera frams from lag to contact and mark the bottom wrist? I would guess it is pretty similar.

the last 2 frames to contact are similar with most hitters. no turning of hips, arms and shoulders anymore, all that turns is the barrel around the hands towards the ball. yeager said all energy most be in the hands then and not in the body anymore. in a good kinematic sequence the lower parts have finished their job when the hands take over.

BTW:I love the wright clip. look how flexible his spine is. not just a stiff rotation axis but a lot of twisting and lateral bend going on with it.

Yes. Each part of the body must decelerate to transfer the energy to the next link in the kinetic chain.

Great videos NoonTime. You can really see it if you focus on the front elbows right before contact.
