  • What else do your kids do other than baseball/softball?

Daughter: When she was a preteen she played softball, travel softball starting at ten, basketball, soccer and field hockey. She was also in the school choir and band. In middle school she was not good enough to make soccer and basketball. Field hockey was in the spring. She started on the middle school softball team, played travel softball and rec basketball, soccer and field hockey. She was also in the choir and orchestra. In high school he played volleyball, basketball and softball. She played travel softball which was now year round workouts. She dropped band after freshman year and choir after soph year. She played softball in college. She's also snow skied and water skied since she was five.

Son: When he was a preteen he played baseball, travel baseball starting at nine, basketball, soccer and football. He was also in the choir and orchestra. In middle school he played football, basketball, baseball, travel soccer, rec and travel basketball and travel baseball. He dropped choir and orchestra in middle school. In high school he played soccer, basketball freshman year, baseball and travel baseball which was now a year round practice deal. He plays college baseball. He does kick boxing in the offseason as part of his conditioning. He's snowboarded and waterskied since he was three. Snowboarding translated into skateboarding. He also played a lot of pickup street roller hockey until high school.

We had a basketball hoop in the driveway and a hitting net (with tee and soft toss machine) in the garage. Between the two kids it seemed something was always going on in the driveway. We also received several warnings about my kids taking grounders on the fairway behind our house. My kids never took up golf. But they would go out at dusk to chip and putt with me.

Daughter is 7 and has played baseball for 3 years. She is playing softball for the first time this fall, and after two practices she is not a fan. She played soccer at 5 and 6 but didn't want to play this year. She also plays basketball, takes piano, tumbling, and likes to watch Nickelodeon.

Son is 10. He has played baseball since he was 5, travel started at 8. This fall he is playing baseball, even though I tried to get him to play football. He has played a season of football, and it is his most natural sport, but he doesn't like it. He played soccer up until age 8, but doesn't care for it either. He has played basketball since he was 6, but getting him to practice is like pulling teeth, so I back off. He also takes piano and has taken gymnastics in the past. His newest obsession is disc golf. He plays almost every day, and it is right there behind baseball as his favorite thing to do. He is also into skateboarding and longboarding, and of course xbox and PS3. Our front yard is where the neighbor kids gather for sporting events. Wiffle ball and street hockey are the two most popular games. Lacrosse isn't popular around here, but my son has a fascination with it. If there were teams in this area, he wold be all over that.

Son is 10 (just tuned it last week). He played soccer exclusively from 6-8, but didn't want to play once he started baseball at 8. Since then he's done baseball exclusively (yr round) in both LL and TB. I figured he needed another outlet and we're exploring lacrosse, which it looks like he's going to do. I was disappointed when he stopped wanting to play soccer because 1) he was really good at it, and 2) Not knowing anything about soccer, I was able to just enjoy it as a proud father from the sidelines. He did tryout for a club soccer team on a whim (friend was doing it) and made it, but after a couple practices I could see he didn't want to be there until scrimmage time. We bailed out before dropping the check.

Daughter is 6. She did cheering for a peewee football team at 5, which morphed into "competitive cheer", which morphed into tumbling also. She's doing soccer for the first time this fall.

        11yr Old Son:
        Baseball - lots
Cub Scouts - done after 3yrs

        Soccer - just for fun
Football - done after 2 yrs flag 1 tackle
        Wrestled - done 1 yr
Cross Country - done 1 yr
        Theatre - done 1 yr

        8yr Old Daughter
        Dance - active
Soccer - done after 2 seasons (very good)
        Gymnastics - active
Basketball - done after 1 season (very good)
        Girl Scouts - active
        Theatre - active

        3 yr old TBD

Funny thing, as a parent I watch my daughter's sports completely differently. Zero expectations of anything and she tears it up but has little interest in team sports other than the social part. She is very athletic and usually top player in whatever she does but seems to care less about the outcome or competition. Never wants to just play/practice just for fun. I think a big part has to do with keeping up with her brother. She is very tuff!

My son cares a lot about his performance and I do too (not sure what came first me caring or him caring). I am sure it's not the best place for me to be for him, and I work on it all the time. Backed off big time this year regarding coaching him. To many times it becomes a battle instead of the fun it should be. He works hard at being better at whatever sport he is playing. He is not as natural as his sister but his work makes up for it and usually becomes a very good player on his teams.

I don't have kids yet but when I have one he will probably secretly drink beer and try to hook up with girls

But I need to find a genetically gifted wife first to create a good baseball player.
I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

                11yo - Son
                -----------------------
Baseball, Baseball, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer (this year ... 4'10 115 lb soccer player. Love it. Enjoy the big field son.).
Builds with Legos quite a bit, sorts baseball cards, makes up new logos/uniforms/hats for baseball teams, and generally acts pretty darn silly. My buddy says, "Plant a potato, get a potato." We like a lot of the same things. It's pretty cool. There are guys that spend time with their kids because they have to. I'd rather spend time with my kids than my buddies.

Physically, he's probably going to end up being a football player, which kinda sucks because the quality of football here is horrible. As I say the only place Town-Name football takes you is .... the hospital.

                8yo- Daughter
                -----------------------
Horse-riding lessons (Western style, I guess). Soccer.
Drawing horses. Reading about horses. Talking about horses. Thinking about horses. Dreaming about horses.

Is perfecting her delivery when asking for dad to buy a horse. It's just a matter of time. Horse, trailer, truck, barrels, etc.

Wants to be a vet. Already has her entire life planned out. She's going to have 3 sons, and they are all going to run a different part of her ranch/vet practice. I'm not joking.

                5yo - Son
                -----------------------

See 11yo son. It's like they've been cloned.
5yo loves to give the couch pillows a "power bomb" or whatever finishing move The Big Show uses. I swear he's going to break his tailbone one of these days. The other day, for about 20 straight minutes, he ran around the circular floor plan saying "I'm Sonic" (the hedgehog). I don't think this kid has ever walked anywhere. He's either asleep or running.

My wife's the only one that's not "like us" (we're very active, ADD), and spends quite a bit of time looking at us wondering what the hell happened and if the room is going to stop shaking.

That's college. My son got busted for underage drinking in the parking lot of a football game. To quote him when he called: "75,000 freak'n people. Half are underage and they catch me!" To quote me: "Don't expect me to pay for your stupidity." He had to pay a $500 fine and attend an alcohol awareness class. He was fortunate the AD or the coach didn't find out.

I'm very glad I had a daughter before a son and they are five years apart. I was very involved in her sports activities before my son even started playing. Our best conversations were in the car heading to and from travel tournaments when she was 14-17 years old. She told me a lot more than I believe girls typically tell dads. She told me the first time she got on a bus for softball in college she sat down an started thinking about all the trips to tournaments together. I'll admit had my son been born first it mght have been competely different. It's not that I would have ignored her. But I might have been less involved. My kids (24 an 19) don't fear me. They trust me. It's important.

My elder son doesn't do sports at all, well other than getting a black belt in Karate when he was in high school.

Younger son played soccer from 5 yo to 8yo. Then he started competitive swimming and baseball. Actually won the silver and bronze medals(breast stroke and backstroke) in San Diego Junior Olympics when he was 10. Then he quit swimming after 12yo. As for non sports activities he plays piano and clarinet in middle school. Now he pretty much just focus on baseball only in HS.

How about video game? He likes to play starcraft and combatarm online. He and his friends are actually talking about form a HS team to play starcraft:gt

Are your kids those inlanders (can't remember the more derogatory name) who crash the local's waves? It was a big issue when I lived in South Mission and Redondo. But I was part of the volleyball crowd. Surfers and volleyball players don't mix well.

I have never had a problem. Not here, nor in Hawaii. Have family that live at Redondo, PV, Ventura and Carpenteria and have very big high school classmate that has been living on Maui going on 25 years. I used to play beach volleyball at Santa Monica, Venice and Hermosa Beach. My friends lived 1 block from the beach right next to Redondo near the stacks.
