  • Another season in the books

Well, after this weekend, my boys are officially done for the season.

I was very fortunate this year to have my younger son get on a very good TB team in late May. Was kind of by accident, but he had a great time. Had fun, and improved in all aspects of the game since he started. Head coach has been fantastic, team has 13 kids on it, and unlike other teams I've seen in tournaments we bat all 13, and for the most part kids switch off positions every inning.

He wrapped up his season last weekend at Cal Ripken in Aberdeen. Team made it to the championship game and lost. Not bad for first time down there. Great experience. He even got the start on the main field

My older son plays LL and AllStars travel which is a few tournaments. He's wraps up his season this weekend. He's also had some great coaches, and is looking forward to LL Majors next year.

Neither will play fall ball. I like them to rest their arms. They play soccer and basketball. Both will be in a pitching clinic through the winter.

    Anyway, another good year...

Do they put bases on the grass and pitch from in front of the mound on the main field?

The main field isn't the Ironbirds field which is of course 60/90, it's Cal's Sr. Yard. Here's a better pic of the whole field:

They do 50/70 on that field as well.

For other fields there including Fenway, I have pics here:

OK, that's on the other side of the hotel with all the smaller fielders. Once on the big field the games are played on the Ironbirds field, a park a couple of miles down the street and a high school on the other side of town. The reason I asked is my son played on the Ironbirds field when he was fourteen and fifteen. He dropped one just inside the foul pole when he was fifteen. He also met Cal Ripken when he went out to the cages for extra hitting between games. Cal was there with his son who was also in the tournament.

We were there the same weekend. After seeing your son's Stars jersey, I remember seeing your team. Congrats on a great performance.

            Nice. Which age group?

Cal Ripken wasn't there, but we ran into Al Leiter eating breakfast in our hotel Saturday morning. Very nice guy. As coincidence would have it, my son wears 19, which Leiter wore for a while.
