  • treat every pitch as a new at bat

I found something out about my hitting in the second half of my season. I used to throw away a lot of ABs because I was pissed of by missing a good pitch to hit or swinging at a ball out of the zone. then I would think "I should have hit that" or "now I have to...".

this is very bad for the production at the plate of course. thus I think it is important to treat every pitch as a new AB. When I swing and miss or fail to swing at a fat pitch over the plate I step out a little or take a little dry swing to relax and then start over again at the next pitch. I think this is very important to not be affected by the previous pitches. don't change anything in the approach unless it is two strikes.
I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

If it works for you, that's what matters. I had a kid on my 13U travel team this year who at the beginning of the season would get really irritated when he missed a good pitch. He would sulk and slump his shoulders like he just struck out. After the second time observing this behavior, I called at him from the 3rd base coach box, "how many srikes do you have?" He responded with "2." So I replied, "then why are you acting like you just struck out? You have 3 strikes. Use them all, if you have to!" He didn't sulk much after that.

I don't believe a hitter can treat every pitch like a new at bat. It's not allowing for considering how the pitcher may pitch to the count. BUt it is a good idea not to get flustered over a bad swing. Sometimes the pitcher wins.

Good coaching "Un".....I just say it a bit different, but the same thought process.

"C'mon, no big deal....they give you three strikes for a reason...use 'em".

Agreed, not a "new AB", but definitely a "new opportunity".....you can't get the last one back, so move on.

I tell the kids "you're entitled to three good hacks..use em all!" Also..No fastball strikes get by without a hack. Those two things help, at least for me, to get hitters into an aggressive mindset.
