  • A Well Paid Slave: Curt Flood's Fight For Free Agency In Professional Sports

Just finished reading this a month or so ago. Really well done, almost exhaustive attention to legal detail that is balanced out well with stories about the effects of the case on his career, health, marriage, etc. A book very much worthy of his legacy.

A couple of facts I learned from it:

    1) Joe Torre was the first current player to vote in favor of the players association paying for the legal fees.

    2) They never expected to win or for him to play again. He knew that it likely meant the end of his playing days (it wasn't, if you count his sorry stint for the Senators under Ted Williams).

    3) Only former players would testify on his behalf. No current player would touch it.

    4) Up until his dying days, the first big money signings would come up to him at old timer games and all-star events and thank him for what he did.

I recommend it. He's an interesting guy and the story is one of the most important events in modern baseball.
