  • Rated Rookie Cards

Today I pulled a Rated Rookie Randy Johnson from a Donruss pack. Are these real RCs, or "year afters"? I conveniently lost my price guide, so I can't check. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Depends. If it's from 1989 and he's wearing an Expos uniform, it's Randy Johnson's rookie card (the term "Rated Rookie" only appeared on regular set cards...Donruss Rookies, which are XRC's, had the "The Rookies" on the front).

As for "Rated Rookies," some are rookie cards, some are not. Mark McGwire is a good example of NOT being one.

I checked-it's from '89, and he's in an Expo's uniform. Do you happen to have the book value for it?

You'd never get book value (IIRC $5). Baseball cards from 1987-1996 (especially) were so overproduced that even a sure fire Hall of Famer like Randy Johnson is only worth about a dollar or two.

Good call. I sold a 12 card lot containing Sheffield, Johnson and Griffey rookies from the same set on Ebay and only got like $5 for all 12 cards.
          WAR? Prove it!
