  • I despise glossy cards

Talk about frustrating. And to make matters worse i have no idea if I am doing this the right way. I have a complete set of the 2007 Tristar "Pro Debut" cards. These cards are really glossy. So I obviously want to send them ttm.
This is how I have been doing it: Rub baby powder on the card, gently rub with my finger, then take a tissue and gently wipe off the baby powder.
    Ok, questions...

1.) With the above info, am I doing this right?

2.) How much baby powder do I use?

I don't know if you are doing it right or not, but I have used pencil erasers to rub the cards and that has worked really well for me (thanks Bill for the advice on that)!

      Paul,
Won't that ruin the card? How hard do you rub with the eraser?

Or we can just boycott glossy cards and just stick to A&G and Heritage cards.

I use Gold Bond foot powder, which I think is basically the same as Baby Powder except it's unscented, so there aren't so many extra chemicals besides the talcum powder. I usually go pretty light on the powder, just enough to cover the card. I run it in with my fingers and wipe it off with my thumb. All that powder can make a room really dusty pretty quick, but the results are worth it. Nothing bothers me like getting a card back smudged when a player who took the time to sign it. I have to say I think a lot of it also depends on the type of pen/marker that the player uses to sign the card, something which we the senders have very little control over.

I use the white Pentel Hi-Polymer eraser for my glossy cards. Leaves no streaks and easy to use. If they're super glossy, I just go over them with a little baby powder afterwards. Trust me, I've definitely got my method down as I send out a ton of Upper Deck and Bowman cards......but I 110% agree that glossy cards are a pain.

I don't rub very hard... I actually practiced with a few duplicates first... if you go to hard it will hurt the card, but if you start light and then press harder you can tell the gloss isn't as glossy (for lack of better word).

For what it's worth, AC, I use the same exact approach you do. I'm not sure if it's "right" or not, but I do seem to get back less "bad" sigs than I used to, although I still get a smudged or otherwise not so great looking one from time to time.

I'm trying to force myself to send just non-glossy cards at this point, but in situations where you're dealing with prospects or other young players who don't have many cards, it can be difficult.

I just got back a 2001 Topps Archives card I sent, which have a very high gloss on them (unlike great TTM cards like Topps Heritage and Topps Fan Favorites). I rubbed this one down with plenty of foot powder and the result speaks for itself.

I use denim. I took an old pair of jeans and cut a square, I rub the card in it and send away....... not sure if it works on super glossy but regular series topps works great

                      Hey Chad,
I just went ahead and bought a few on eBay. Brand new in packaging.

Bowman, & Tristar must not want people to try to get autos on their cards. What a pain!
                      Thanks again,
                      Tony

I understand your pain, but realize that most collectors dont get their cards autographed and a real glossy card looks ten thousand times better than a dull card for those of us collectors who care deeply about what a card looks like.

See, maybe I'm in the minority, but I think the Heritage-type cards look way better than the super-high gloss stuff.

IMHO, thats because of the neat old design, and also to mimick the old cards, it shouldnt have gloss.

I feel that if a 1959 card had a great action shot on it, it would look way better glossy than flat, but again, thats just my opinion.

I really dislike glossy cards. I do, however, like them of stars (i.e. A-Rod).
