Well, I busted a few packs of 2008 Topps Finest and 2008 Upper Deck Spectrum my former boss gave me at half price, each lot guaranteed to contain an autograph. As you can imagine, I jumped on this. The '08 Topps Finest yielded Chris Seddon as well as some nice base set cards. Okay. Chris Seddon. Lefty spot starter with Florida. Yeah having his auto is kinda cool. But '08 Upper Deck Spectrum? With a tremendously high dupe rate, I got...drum roll please...Don Dokken, lead singer of Dokken. Uhh. I bought some packs of BASEBALL CARDS. You know, trading cards that contain pictures or autographs or whatever of people that are generally related to BASEBALL? As a result, the card is up on the trading boards, and I will take literally ANY baseball autograph (although I'd prefer a player I don't already have...ask me who I have coming from eBay if you don't see a player listed before you do, though) in trade. I can't believe we have people complaining about the Bowman Scouts autograph set (which I think is actually pretty cool), yet ignoring this.
Also, Upper Deck doesn't seem to get it with regards to why Moonshots (autographs of the Mercury and Apollo Program astronauts inserted into 2007 Topps Co-Signers...while I'm against non-baseball things in baseball card sets, I can at least accept these as palatable) succeeded. There's no other delivery vehicle, plus it has UNIVERSAL appeal. Who actively dislikes astronauts? Whereas with a heavy metal rocker, there are about a half a dozen different other delivery vehicles (including sets devoted to musicians...yes, Donruss does make one). To say nothing of lacking universal appeal (I despise heavy metal).
Jeez, as opposed to wasting time with heavy metal rocker (I still can't believe it) autos, why not do General Manager autos (Topps has hinted at doing this, btw, which IMO would be really cool...imagine the rush for Billy Beane, Theo Epstein, Brian Cashman, and Omar Minaya and to a lesser degree J.P. Ricciardi and Kevin Towers...)? Or heck, OWNER autos. I wouldn't mind coach autos, either.
