  • Topps does it again!

After buying a pack of 2008 TriStar (which had some awesome players in it...Mets prospects Bobby Parnell and Scott Moviel plus top 'spects David Price and Matt LaPorta), I got three packs of 2008 Topps Finest, from which I did get a blue refractor card of Carlos Zambrano, a nice card of Mets ace Johan Santana, one of the highly desirable rookie redemption cards (I got number 9), and...what is THIS?

In case anyone doesn't get the reference, go to youtube and search for "Topps box rip." Turns out that's Topps' idea of a joke for the 2008 Finest set. I was told it doesn't count against the odds of other autographs in the box, but what if I'd gotten a common card of David Wright or Jose Reyes here? If Topps stuck Wright's image in a Yankee uniform or put Jose Reyes' head on the Roadrunner's (from Looney Tunes') body with the caption "Beep! Beep! BHOOM!," I could deal with it. I mean, at least it would be a BASEBALL-related prank.

If the card had been seeded with the rest of the autograph cards/took the place of a baseball player's autograph (like 2008 Upper Deck Spectrum), then I would be out and out furious as opposed to just plain annoyed. But it would seem my feelings about Topps' jokes have spread.

Search for "Rachel Tinsley" on eBay. Several cards, not one single bid, not one single buyer. However, I'm very lucky to have already traded this one away (though it's to someone I promised a Steve Dalkowski auto to when I visit him [probably this month], so that's REALLY what I'm trading) for a player's auto!

Looks like filler to me. What happened to the days of "Win a 2 Week Trip To Spring Training!" ?

So far, this has been the exception, not the norm, for Topps. I've gotten autographs of Chris Seddon, Chin-Lung Hu, and Curtis Granderson (the latter two I'm big fans of) in '08 Finest packs. I can't say the same for Upper Deck (see the pack pull thread). However, even if it is the exception and not the norm, if anyone works for Topps out there and is reading this: I like your products. I buy everything Bowman that you put out. I can't wait for the Fautino de los Santos and Eddie Kunz autographed prospect cards this year. And unlike most collectors, I actually think the '08 Bowman Scout autos are a cool idea. But for God's sake, stick to baseball in a baseball-related product!

It's times like this I remember why I collect the older sets that are insertless, and the highlight of the set is the rookie card. WTF has happened to the good old base set of olden days?

I don't get it! Does TOPPS think that inserting a card of some Paris Hilton bimbo wanna-be well help sales? This is just odd!
