Here's a colorization I made from my original Nov.21st post here. I'm still working on some other variations (larger & with full-color for the stands), but this version is featured on Uni Watch today here: Sunday Morning Uni Watch. Thoughts/comments?

              • Prohibition, What's Prohibition?
                Babe & Some Friends - 1920's
Well Prohibition (in the U.S.) was the ban on the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol, in place from 1920 to 1933. Ken Burns just did a documentary all about it for PBS (a bit drawn out, but worth watching). I personally find the fantastic HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" a more riveting look at the early days of Prohibition, which has quite a few baseball references (most recently Ty Cobb in an episode titled 'Georgia Peaches') and an interesting view of Arnold Rothstein and the 1919 Black Sox mess. Anyways...here we find our Babe in 'good spirits' with the crowd at a speakeasy, circa mid-1920's. I'd guess that this was taken in a major league city (NY, Chicago etc.), but it's very hard to say for sure. A few faces look familiar to me, but I can't really place any names on them. Anybody else? Here's the full-sized version which is a bit larger: (882 x 678)

                • To Babe's right, Walter "Dutch" Ruether, pitcher. Ruether was a teammate of Ruth's in 1926-1927.

                    Interesting!
That might narrow down the year, unless they were friends before he joined the Yankees in '26.

                    • Yes,there are two future HOF members in that picture of Babe Ruth with legion of party animals down in basement!Directly to Ruth`s left is Heine Manush(a woman`s hand is holding his chin). To the far right(trying to partially hide his face with his hand) is the Babe`s insurance agent and hard hitting(4 time AL batting champion)outfielder Harry Heilmann.Heilmann has the same lifetime BA as the Babe(.342)and hit .403 in 1923 to beat out Ruth(.393)for the batting title(not bad for an insurance salesman).Outfielder Manush batted .330 lifetime. This photo was taken in 1925 in Detroit.Ty Cobb was Manush and Heilmann`s manager with the Tigers that year-they better hope he doesn`t find out!Ha,Ha.

                        Fantastic info Nimrod!!!
Well, that certainly makes that photo even better...historically speaking.

Here's a great pic that shows Connie Mack, The Babe and Jimmie Foxx hanging out in the dugout during the '34 Tour Of Japan. I'm not certain where this pic was snapped during the Tour, but it seems like this is either before the game started or the US Team was batting. Also, that might be Lou Gehrig with his hand on his face next to Foxx.
This photo was taken during the 1934 tour, but I believe it was taken in the Philippines, not Japan. The 2 fellows on the left in the suits look more Filipino than Japanese and you can see the campaign hat of a U.S. Army officer sitting in the second row. Very neat picture that I haven't seen before.

I typically just use "1934 Tour Of Japan" as a catch-all for that tour.
In any case, the Philippines does seem like a good guess for that pic, I agree.
Glad you enjoyed it...I've got some more coming soon!

                            • I think you are right about that being Gehrig. You probably have already heard that the uniform Gehrig is wearing there sold for just over $507,000.00 at an auction back in August! You can see in the picture that Connie Mack is present as manager, but the Babe, who was the honorary captain, tried to act as manager as much as he could. He once even called for an early morning meeting of the team and chewed out Gehrig and pitcher Earl Whitehill for being tardy and told them if they were late again he would send them back to the States! These games would be the last that Ruth and Gehrig would ever play together as Ruth was on his way to the Braves in`35.Sadly,Ruth and Gehrig were in the midst of a falling out.The All Americans won all 17 of their games against the Japanese teams.Ruth hit 13 homers and won the trophy for having the highest BA(.407).The Babe kept launching 500 foot plus blast in the games and during BP.The good people of Japan were so awestruck that they eventually erected a statue of Ruth.I believe this is the only instance of a foreign nation honoring an athlete of another nation in this fashion.

                              • If that picture was taken in the Philippines, then it would have been Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila. The All Americans played their last three games of the tour there.Come to think of it,even back in the Thirties the Japanese would not have been too thrilled to have American military on the scene and vice versa!Must be Manila because Wikipedia says that Gehrig hit the first homer there(12/02/1934)and Ruth hit the second one ever shortly thereafter.
