  • Babe Polishing His Trophies - ca.1937
Yeah, "polishing his trophies" does have a euphemistic ring to it, but that's actually what Babe is doing here. I didn't have the exact year for this pic, but Claire seems to have had a major weight gain specifically in 1937 (based on my archives), so we'll go with that. Babe's adopted daughter Julia also looks on in what I'd assume is the NYC apartment.

The book Babe is signing is a copy of the then newly published, "The Babe Ruth Story", authored by Bob Considine. So who is the gentleman that is holding the book? Hard to say for sure. It looks a bit like Bob Considine, but most of the pics I've seen show him looking a bit more worn in the face this guy (Here he is in LIFE, 1945). It might be somebody involved in the making of the movie of the same name, as I think this pic was a publicity shot taken on-set.
I would say that's the same fellow but he looks haggard in the Life photo.

Though only for a short time it seems (ca.1937). She was fit (more or less) in most other years.
I don't know if indulging was the problem or if there was a medical issue.

            • Regarding her weight, here's a pic of Babe & Claire from the 1937 All-Star Game (July 7) in Washington.

              • Here's a picture of Julia, Babe & Claire at the 1936 World Series in New York. Claire is noticeably thinner here (not exactly skinny, but thinner).

Yes,you`re right.I`ve seen pictures taken of her in the 50`s and 60`s were she appears to be reasonably trim.

Fresno Bee photographer John Walker has an excellent website called Historical Perspectives which to quote: "Historical Perspectives provides a unique pictorial look at Central Valley history. Photographer John Walker studies old photographs and searches archives, records and maps to discover the stories behind the places we pass each day." So I'd highly recommend you check out his article about The Babe, Firemen's Park & night baseball here: Babe Ruth at Firemen’s Park, 1931.

Here's a fun locker room picture of The Babe gifting Lou Gehrig and the guys with some of his signature undergarments. Judging from Babe's weight and Lou's haircut, this pic probably dates ca.1927

You have really posted some amazingly rare photos of the Babe and continue to do so!I have been a baseball fan for light years and confess that I have seen maybe no more than 5% of any of these photos before.Great work. Can`t help but notice that Gehrig`s biceps are about twice as big as the other fellows in this photo! Now I know why Carl Mays backed out of a fight with Lou when Gehrig told him to put up or shut up.What I can`t figure out is how Mays could be dumb enough to needle the Iron Horse in the first place!

                            Thanks Nimrod!
I still have a huge backlog of photos to be edited/posted, so there's a lot more to come.
As far as Lou's physique, yeah...I don't know how good a fighter he was, but if he got you in a hold there was probably no escape!

Neat picture...looks like "Jumpin' Joe" Dugan on the left, Wilcy Moore standing, and probably Urban Shocker on the right.

Since the holidays are upon us, I thought I'd rerun a few of my favorite Christmas themed Babe pics. So here’s the actual Christmas card that Babe and his wife Claire sent out to their friends in 1930.
