The kid in the picture is (or was) Lennie Bielskie. Ruth gave him 20 bucks for the ball, two new signed balls, and a box seat for the rest of the game. Not a bad deal for being in the right place at the right time, namely somewhere past Trumball Avenue at the moment of impact. Just a note. Four games later Ruth got his 2000th BB.

a very welcome addition to this (hopefully)never-ending thread about The Babe.
lol...as much as Ruth was photographed....good chance.

          • Well, let's keep this never-ending thread going...
Here's The Babe with some fellow Yankees posing for the Christy Walsh invented All-America Team in 1932. Lazzeri looks really thrilled to be there...haha...with that "Can I take this f'n sweater off now?" look on his face. I wonder if any of those sweaters are still around somewhere today. I believe this was taken at the 1932 World Series in Chicago.

L-R: Bill Dickey, Tony Lazzeri, Lou Warneke, Babe Ruth.

Willard stands 6'6". That's pretty huge for those days...

              • The Babe at his 1st wife's funeral. This is kind of a sad one, but interesting because you can read the original AP story line.

Hey 5 bucks is 5 bucks, 1920. You can buy lots of dogs and some pops.

Haha....well it's not like The Babe needed the money. I guess it was her little "f*#k you" to The Babe. Anyhoo....

Here's a cool pic of The Babe hanging out on the streets of Boston before a game at Fenway - early 1930's. Imagine walking down the street and seeing Babe Ruth standing there in his full uniform!

Yup, another pic of The Babe with a child. This would seem to be a very charming spring training photo.

I think that one of those sweaters was in the auction of Barry Halper's collection, can't remember which player. I was lucky enough to pick up a set of catalogues from that sale for $5, and it is just incredible how much great stuff that guy had. There are three separate catalogues and an intro book in a slipcase, very nicely done by Sotheby's. I recommend grabbing them if you're interested in baseball memorabilia and happen to see them somewhere. Barry was able to get EVERYBODY to sign for him, even Clipper.

That photo of Babe and Hack is odd...almost looks like they're holding hands instead of shaking, and Babe is on the verge of cracking up. There is a fantastic photo in "The Ultimate Baseball Book" of Ruth and Gehrig with Hack, and it really accentuates how atypical Wilson's physique was (those tiny feet, OMG)...the Yanks both have sour looks on their faces, like they really didn't want to pose with the guy. I hope not just because Hack was different looking!

You folks have done a wonderful job of bringing The Babe back to life. Based on these terrific posts, it appears to me that Babe Ruth would have been a very easy man to like. No wonder he was such a hero in his own era. Thanks for all the pictures.
