When the National Association formed in 1871, the Boston team included four members of the highly successful Cincinnati Red Stockings touring baseball team of 1869-70: George and Harry Wright, Cal McVey, and Charlie Gould. These four were joined by star players Al Spalding and Ross Barnes, and in 1872 former Cincinnati player Andy Leonard also joined the new Red Stockings. After a third place finish in 1871, Boston won four straight championships.
After the National Association folded and the National League took its place, the Boston Red Stockings (or Red Caps) were part of the new league, and are the predecessors of today's Atlanta Braves.
