  • 1871-1875 Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia (National Association)

The first champions of the National Association were the members of the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia in 1871. Despite signing Cap Anson to join the team for the next four years, the club failed to win another championship, as the Boston Red Stockings then dominated the league. The Athletics were charter members of the new National League in 1876, but had lost Anson to the Chicago White Stockings, and after one mediocre season the team folded.
