The top two greatest pennant races out of top ten all time as listed on ESPN's Take Two.

1. 1978 AL East:

In midseason, it looked like the Red Sox were going to run away with it -- a 10-game lead over the second-place Brewers, and a 14½-game lead over the Yankees. Then the Yankees came back, including a devastating four-game sweep at Fenway in early September known as the "Boston Massacre," and opened a 3½-game lead. Which the Red Sox closed by winning their final eight games. A tie at season's end forced a one-game playoff at Fenway.
Bucky Dent rescued the Yankees in 1978.
You know the story: Bucky Dent's three-run homer off Mike Torrez won the game for the Yankees.

2. 1967 AL: Red Sox triumph in four-team race

On Sept. 1, the standings looked like this:

It came down to the final two games of the season,
and the Red Sox beat the Twins twice in a two-game series, clinching the pennant.
Yaz went 10-for-13 to close out his great Triple Crown season, as he lead the Sox, to a 92-70 mark, won the flag with the lowest winning percentage ever at that point. But it was a far cry from ninth place, where Boston had finished in 1966, and a long time coming, too -- it had been 21 years since the Red Sox had won their last AL flag.

The Yanks were the first team, in the early 30s, to have numbers. These represented their order in the lineup. Ruth was #3, Gehrig was cleanup, and Tony "Poosh Em Up" Lazzeri was #6.

It won't take two weeks. The M's will sweep Oakland while Boston won't be able to win a single game.

In further news, a NASTY FIRE-BREATHING DRAGON invaded the CASTLE, and stayed there from here to eternity, blocking passage to their October pipe dreams. There was no Prince Charming to help out the damsel in distress, and nobody to slay the nasty dragon. Not even anybody from up north in CHOWDAVILLE, USA. Awwwwwwwwww!

The end is near, and approaching at a supersonic rate! Be afraid. Be very afraid!

Nope. Hargrove doesn't have the smarts to IBB David Ortiz, so he deserved the loss. He must really hate you guys also, not just the Yanks.

Prince who? You had all August and September to knight them. Not much more baseball left, you know!

Make up an interesting write-up on Donnie, so that it'll sound nice when you recite it daily!

It is hereby decreed and has been proclaimed into law that no Boston Red Sox team will ever knock out a Yankee team to go onto the WS. In an off year, so be it, but game 7 always rears its ugly head at the most unexpected moment. In the good years, it'll never happen.

It is impossible to consider the Boston Red Sox beating the NY Yankees in a 7-game series. It cannot happen, and therefore will not happen. It's all up to Lowe and Wakefield, since we've got Pedro fully covered!

Now then, I'll need to be reminded just how many weeks our bet was as to who will win their next WS first. We'll have to have a super duper bet if we do eventually meet in the ALCS. Not only avs and sigs, but dignity and territorial pride is at stake. You shall not win, the Yankees shall always prevail!

Please file that away somewhere with your great grandkids, as you're never gonna use it! *Never*!
