If you read my post, it implys that the Yankees won't be going far this year so you may as well make plans to start your offseason early and book your golf vacation for late September since the Yankees' season will be over then.

I should've elaborated. Your telling YM to book his golf trip early made you seem like a Yankee fan. After all, we're so used to telling you folks that, it ain't even funny. Then again, it just may still be!

People thought that Albert Belle was grouchy by demanding his meal money when he'd gotten $13m per, but was disabled, so he couldn't play. Pedro beats them all, threatening to bolt to the Bronx, and obliging Henry, Lucchino et al to give him the $17.5m extension in *MAY*, though they're contractually obliged to do this by *NOVEMBER*!

If Pedro expects more than this, such as $20m, he'll be in his own stratosphere, in more ways than one.

I just read that Soriano was on the trading block. A .290 BA, 38 hrs, 90 RBI 2nd baseman! How could they improve production from that position? What? No one's allowed to slump at any time during the season or the playoffs? Gee, I guess we should dump Pedro for the 8th inning in game 7 and Nomar for not performing up to parr in September. The reason Soriano was on the trading block was that he might be the worst defensive second baseman since... well, since Chuck Knoblauch, but he's really really bad. Plus, his October slumping is just not the kind of thing that flies with the Yankees. From what I can remember, though, the only guy the Yanks were looking for in return was Carlos Beltran, who puts up similar numbers. The thinking was that Soriano's defense is just <i>too</i> bad for him to stay at 2nd, so he would have to move to the outfield anyway... might as well get somebody who can play the outfield. I was always against moving him, of course.

Last I heard, Nomar was on the trading block, and actual discussions, including who he'd be traded to (ChiSox for LF Magglio Ordonez) were made very public. Remember that one?

As to the Yanks, Soriano has to step it up, as he needs to reach his potential. He's missed a few plays, since he'd started out as a SS, but he's been coming along. I wouldn't say he's atrocious, but he's not quite Alomar in his prime, defensively.

As to dumping, wasn't Bubba Gump (Grady Little) dumped? Yup, because he'd listened to Pedro instead of his own whims, he was sent packing.

Yeah, but who would've played 2B? We'd have had to give up Nick Johnson also, and sending two of our young studs to one team doesn't seem Kosher. To get Javier Vazquez, we only gave up Nicky, plus Juan Rivera (corner OF (starter or 4th OF)) and Randy Choate (lefty specialist).

The only reason you Beantowners mention "Current Year" is that every one of you talks about "This is our year", then when the inevitable failure to the usual suspects occurs, you can always ignore that by saying you'd only like to look at the future.

Can't you people ever say that the "Year" you'd wished for didn't pan out? Just admit it!

You can wish for 2004, 2005 and 2006 all you want, but if you again fail those times, then ignoring these won't help much.

What does Nomar have to do with my question about Soriano? Everyone knows, (for months) the Sox tried to get A-Rod to replace Nomar after he turned down Boston's generous offer. Yesterday was the first I heard of the Yankees trying to move Soriano, so I surprised when I read it and wanted to know more about it . . .

Goes back a few years, so it's not just yourself as an individual. Back on other smack boards, I'd met lots of Boston fans. Too many of them said, "This is our year!" again and again, year in, year out. It got routine after awhile, so we'd developed our responses to this.

Right now, I don't bypass failures, be they the 2003 WS, the 9th inning in 2001, the horrendous 1998 ALCS (Pettitte got bombed), nor even the fiascos Clemens and Piazza had. In fact, the 1955, 1957, 1960 WS still leave me wondering, just as the 1995 ALDS leaves me wondering what could've been.

Still, I think you folks should look at the past, even if they've failed you. Even if it's a game 7 failure, just watch it, as I've seen quite a few Boston fans ignoring those. I tend to think that's why we don't see many Teddy, Yaz, Doerr, Pesky or other jerseys when you folks convoy the buses south to the Bronx.

Yes, this is Current Events, but the past shouldn't be forgotten, IMO. Otherwise, that "let's look to next year, forget about last year" seems to be an endless cycle that I've heard too many times. I've always disliked that attitude, so that's why I'd reacted negatively towards it. No ill will intended from myself to you.

Interesting they'd even won those games, since we'd started with journey like Acevedo as our one-time closer. With a staff of a dominating closer, worthy setup and mid-relief options, all we'll need would be 6-7 good innings from our boys.

Sure I'd love Andy to have kept on. Still, Vazquez will now have to shoulder a larger burden, and Brown will have to replace a 1st ballot legend. Not an easy task, but I'll put my trust in them, so long as they give decent efforts, leave everything on the mound before Joe takes them out.

That's all I can hope for: well-played games.
