The Reds-Dodgers rivalry went on for about 20 years, from the Big Red Machine to the 1990 Reds WS squad. Each of them won 5 pennants, while the Reds won 3 WS to the Dodgers 2. They finished first/second in 70,73-78,81,85,88,90 (for a total of 12 seasons out of 21) in the old NL West. To put that in perspective, over the same period, the BoSox and Yanks went 1-2 only 3 times (77,78,86) and the next highest two team was Philly-Pitts 5 times and NYY-Balt. 4 times.

I hadn't realized that the Reds-Dodgers rivalry even existed. Once the Dodgers and Giants left NYC, I figured neither had a natural rival anymore. How wrong I was.

Anyway, you know much about the players at mutual positions from those teams who were most compared? Part of the Brooklyn Dodgers/NY Yankees/NY Giants troika's rivalry is the old "Willie/Mickey", "Yogi/Campy", "Pee Wee/Scooter" rivalries. Who are some of the guys who were most compared, even to this day, from back on the Reds-LA Dodgers?

The Reds-Dodgers rivalry was more like the Yanks-Royals rivalry than any other, just two great teams constantly duking it out. There weren't too many position to position battles over the period, mostly because they played contrasting styles. The Reds had one of the greatest offensive teams ever during the 70's, while the Dodgers were very similar to their squads today, heavy in pitching, light on hitting. The Dodgers had guys like Don Sutton, Tommy John, Burt Hooten, then of course Fernando-Mania, Jerry Reuss, Bob Welch, Rick Honeycutt, and of course, Orel. The Reds had the Machine guys, and then swithced over to guys like Dave Parker, Eric Davis, Barry Larkin. It was always a battle of philosophies. This stat blew me away, the Dodgers were in the top two in the NL in ERA 16 of those 21 years. Only in 70,71,79,86,90 were they below second. That is amazing.

improbus, very interesting take on a rivalry I hadn't even knew existed. So many times being #1 and #2, I thought that term was mostly used in college basketball.
