  • In da Bronx....

Renteria remembered how to hit, Damon continues to amaze, and the stands emptied early. Thought popping into my head: Manny's stated intentions to retire and enjoy his family, Damon's same stated intentions. It's a good thing Theo believes in farm systems and plenty of depth. Weakest point on every team: pitching. Reason: expansion, the natural limits of the human body, disqualifying half the potential pitchers as soon as they are born.

Question: How much is Steingrabber willing to spend? And when is everyone else going to band together and refuse to trade with the Yankees? :grouchy

    17-1. 17-1. 17-1. Oh, what a beautiful morn-ning, oh what a beautiful day...

What would Steingrabber look like in pinstripes?

    • I severely doubt teams will stop trading with the Yankees- they are single handedly restocking the lesser teams' farm teams! They know they would not be able to afford the players so why not get trade them and get some cheap young talent in exchange for the older, expensive, and in Randy Johnson's case- on the downside of a career? Makes sense.

Not to know Johnson too much, just that he may have only four more good season left in his arm before he is forced to retire. Still a long ways off, but still on the downturn of a career.

      • 17-1. Mmmmmm... let me savor this for a little while, like that homemade brownie sundae with caramel fudge I had last week. Mmmmmmmm.....

After tonight the Sox finally have a week-long homestand. It's a two-edged sword, however: The Boys return to welcoming Fenway, but they start off with 4 games against (as Stephen King put it in "Faithful") the loathesome El Birdos. (Sorry, Bigtime. I don't really dislike the O's, but dang it...)

17-1. Wow. That was very nice. Now, if we can get the Yanks out of the way and hack away at the division leaders the same way...

I know Bigtime has already answered this in depth, but there are two other big differences between the O's of Now and the O's of Then: David Segui and Albert Belle. Belle was pure deadwood, gone from the game but still draining the O's coffers. David Segui might as well have been, as he was injured more often than not. Released of those two obligations, the O's have more leeway in tempting and retaining good players. Darn it!

Ouch! Remember, however, that the members of the MASH unit from Charm City are ROAD WARRIORS! For whatever reason, they play much better away from OPCY, and certainly had the Sox number last season...

Nobody really has to band together to stop trading with the Yankees at this point...they have almost nothing in the farm system left to trade! Note that the Johnson deal was a three-way with the Dodgers and the D-backs: otherwise it (probably) would not have gotten done.

Now you see why I fear the Orioles more than any team in the AL...just can't turn your back on a team that always finds a way to win- especially in your home park!

And they are still in first place!

                      • There's no denying the truth in this statement, However, I direct your attention to posts # 4278 and #4290 (I think that's the one. It's the one where he writes all in orange, anyway) in this thread in which Bigtime neatly dissects the Yanks' previous dynasty runs. How much is a win worth if there is almost no competition? Isn't it less of a matter of winning the title than simply taking what no one else has the wherewithal to fight for?

And as I've noted a few times before...rarity denotes value. That's why the Sox's win last season is exponentially more precious than, say, the Yanks' sweep of the Padres in '98.

I guess you have to live it to understand. The 2004 WS was balm for generations of agony. Of course it'd be cool to get there again, but if we can't, then I'll watch the last 8 postseason games from last year, and cry happy, grateful tears all over again. :'~)

Waaaahhh! I know! Hence the "Loathsome El Birdos!" Even my 77 year old Mom calls them that...

Hah! Was that the best your boys can do? Now this was a beating.

I'll just chalk yesterday afternoon up to an excuse to get to a Memorial Day weekend cookout on time.

Good win though (don't want to take anything away from a fourth place team afterall )

                            • I'll grant you that the 17-1 was kind of a dessert-game -- really sweet but not very sustaining.

Now, tonight's game... this one had some meat to it. Ortiz rediscovered his power stroke, Renteria and Manny continued hot, Arod played with his feet nailed to the ground, and Wells finally, finally, showed what he can do. Nice little smile on his face as he saluted the crowd when he left.

                              Wicked cool.
