  • The Red Sox inquired about Phillies right fielder Bobby Abreu.

    Think about it . . . :

    1. Right fielder Trot Nixon is a free agent after this season.

    2. Red Sox manager Terry Francona had a good relationship with Abreu when they were together with the Phillies.

    3. 3-4-5 combination of David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and Abreu would make the Sox's offense even more unbeatable.

    4. Getting Abreu would keep him away from the Yankees.

Hate to be a downer, but I wouldn't want Abreu in Boston. He's routinely criticized in Philadelphia for his lack of hustle, and he's going to cost too much for a player on the wrong side of 30. His homerun and slugging totals are way down this season, too. Besides, isn't replacing Nixon what we got Pena for?

Now, keeping him away from NY....that's a whole 'nother issue.

Yup, there is a way. Run up his pitch count and hope they take him out.

        • Hey, Ken. Check your PM.

I'm hearing that Oakland is going to be a 4-day winning streak, beginning last night. Oh, and no soup for you!

Zito would make a nice statement if he shuts down Beantown tonight.

          • August 18-20 is going to be the next time the real rivalry shows up...again. Fenway Park may not hold many people, but it does hold the Yankees up.

Then the Dodgers get to enjoy their "friends" the Giants two weekends in a row. After that, they meet for the last time for the season the last weekend before the postseason, which may be one team's last series before they cool off while the others play the playoffs.

In other words: I don't qualify the Cubs/Cards as a big rivalry as much as the Astros/Cards rivalry has been lately. Two NLCS visits in a row, heated competitions and both series attract a fair amount of people, meaning sellout crowds.

Since Ken is forever quoting himself, I figured I'd try my hand at it.

Now then, which team has just given up 8 runs in the 8th? A thing of beauty, I tell ya! Frame that Picasso.

Between the 5th when we couldn't score a guy on a leadoff triple, to the 9th, yeah, I was sweating. 3 straight hits to lead off from Mariano the Great will do that to ya. Good thing we had a 3-run lead, or we could've lost if only a 1-run lead.

This seemed like one of those "Pedro" games, where you have the guy in your claws, have him reeling on the ropes, but can't put him away. The Yanks finally put him away, even if he used to be one of our own. Oh well, we finally hung an "L" on his chest, so Supa Dupa 9-and-oh Pitcher Man is now a mere mortal with a gaudy 9-1 record.

Now then, all is quiet in all of New England as they lose (got owned) by 2 touchdowns to a measly field goal. Sometimes I wonder if Mike Lowell should've been the guy they'd traded for and Josh Beckett the "thrown in" they had to take in order to get Lowell. Sure seems that way.

1.5 back, so I do hope that Beantown realizes that, unlike the Mets, their lead is very teeny tiny (and itty bitty, also).

Almost as horrifying to look at as Randy Johnson.

Yeah, the same Randy Johnson that some Schill out there wanted on his team.

Anyway, I believe there should be an amendment made t the Bitter Rivalry charter. I hereby proclaim that any team swept by the NY Yankees should have at least one member of its fanbase wearing the Yankee av & smack sig, even if no wager had been officially placed. All in agreement, say "Aye".

No, it's a Yankee biscuit. You've been eating some of that red chowda again?

As the pic shows, he's a Crafty Yankee fan:

Anyway, it's a good thing y'all won for Schill yesterday. It's not like you folks will win any more games anytime soon. Celebrate that 12-win streak. Like 2004, images found in the rearview mirror get tinier as time goes along.

7-1 so far, bases loaded, no outs, top of the 9th. Gee, I wonder if Big Papi can save ya?

Whoops, 8-1, 2 on, 1 out on the sac fly. A grand salami or two may save your sorry souls.

Did Selig institute expansion when I wasn't looking? Who are the Gaints and the Doders? It's a great thing that only the Giants and the Dodgers had their roots in NYC.
