Edit: I'm including an edit for all...enough with the middle finger shots. Since you can't say that on BBF, pics of people giving each other the finger aren't allowed, either. At the very least, the picture above was meant by Fisk in a halfhearted manner...the ones posted after were not.
Oops...wouldn't have brought up the "bird" shot if I knew it would cause trouble. You can tell from Fisk's face that he was just having fun, I would imagine that the Yanks took it in good spirits.
Man, Fisk's finger looks pretty mangled, huh? Those catchers sure take a beating...
Anybody know if Fisk had any public reaction to Munson's untimely and unfortunate death? I know that those men seemed to genuinely not like each other, and Munson's autobio has some truly unfriendly words about Fisk, but Fisk seems like the kind of guy who would come out and say the right thing in such circumstances...unless he chose to maintain a New Englander's stoic silence.

But...I can bring up the constant first place finishes for the Yankees in the previous seasons after they won the 2000 World Series, and see them choke in 2001, 2003, and the 2004 ALCS. What happened, you say? Misplaced fortunes! 1 billion payroll one year doesn't save the team the year after.
Ahem. The only discussion allowed on here is the fight for 2nd place. Will it be the favored Blue Jays or the slumping Red Sawx?

      I agree: no fistfight discussion.

It'll be the fight for second between the Yankmes and the Jays...especially if we get that early Christmas present from Japan...

I left Fisk up because I agree with you, hellborn...I think there's some genuine humor there, and it's not too in-your-face.

I meant to include your question about Munson in the quote, too.
I don't know about Fisk's reaction to the death, but it got me thinking about Fisk demolishing Munson at homeplate in '72. I believe he flipped the guy upside down. There was some real bad blood between those two.

I don't remember the collision, but in Munson's Yankeeography, there was bad blood. Some arguments because Fisk seemed like the classic "Felix Unger" type and Munson, the "Oscar Madison" type of guy. Munson was scrappy, but beloved, and I'm sure that Fisk was beloved also.

I remember seeing Fisk on some YES show about great catchers. Also in attendance were Messrs. Bench, Berra, PIazza, and a few others I can't remember. Perhaps Carter.

Pedro was about the only guarantee that panned out. Schill helped quite a bit also.

How's Beckett doin't these days? Has his neck healed from twisting it to look into the upper deck? He must enjoy making "donations" to the fans. They can always use the souvenir balls.

Look, I'd like Mats as much as anyone else, but you'll still need an entire staff. The Sawx may be a power player now, but you'll still have to win the games in the ballpark, not on paper. If only on paper, the Yanks would've had 29 rings by now, not "just" 26.

Right now, I presume he'll be there on Opening Day, but if he doesn't give 3 years of quality service on a Johan Santana level, I think that close to 9 figures in bucks would've been spent unwisely.

Huge risk, possibly great reward. The price seems too high for me. Don't forget, it could cost $40-50m just to sign him after the bid is accepted. That's some serious ca$h that event he Yanks wouldn't spend.

No idea how Beckett's doing. I don't have his phone number so I can't ask the man.

At least this past year he was able to keep his beard, something that the anal-retentive Joey Pitbull banned in Florida.

And what's this about not having an entire staff? If we get Matsuzaka, a rotoaotion of him, Beckett, Schilling, Papelbon and Wakefield..that ain't too shabby. Assuming we don't get a closer via free agency to replace Foulke and Papelbon, Hansen'll do just fine...

Hey, how'd that Jaret Wright work out for you guys?

Beckett made 33 starts last season with 16 wins.
I'd say that's not too bad for his first season in a new league and at only 26, he's got many years ahead of him to make the necessary adjustments to be the stopper we think he'll become.

                        • Bah, the Red Sox won't see any more of Jaret Wright. That means the Yankees will have a harder time blowing games without him. Sure he gets a couple wins, and some games he gets rocked to the point where the game's out of reach - at the wrong time. Now he's with the Orioles. Goodbye, and good riddance! We'll rock him at Oriole Park at Camden Yards when the Sox visit there, or Fenway Park. A so-called "superstar" turns out to be the next Hideki Irabu. That means more money wasted from that one billion payroll in 2000.

Another mis-spent fortune by the Boss, right? Why did you shell a multi million contract on a Jason Marquis clone!? I could go on insulting, but the ovation he gets at Yankee won't be too pretty. Oh wait, they boo at every former Yankee that plays horrible and gets traded. Fenway does this too to people who DEFECT to the Yankees. Care if I name them all, other than Johnny "the Traitor" Damon?

That's okay, the only team that I dislike is the bane of my evil. No, not the Cubs, the other New York team. Pinstripes begone, let the Red Sox ruin their fortunes. Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Red Sox will run over the Yankees like no tomorrow, and the Yankees' Japanese pitcher from the 1990s was named...Hideki Irabu. I hope you remember this guy, because he wasn't great for the Pinstripes. Well, thanks for giving the Red Sox free victories and a free trip to the postseason!
