I'm new here, but this thread is great!

I'm a Sox fan btw I've been a fan for close to 2 decades now, so don't assume I'm a band wagon jumper. I actually found this site through a Pats forum & now that the draft has come & gone there's little to discuss there. So here I am.

Obviously the Sox have been great so far especially with their pitching. I'm not ready to declare the division race over, but the Yanks had better hope Clemens is worth every penny of that $28 mil contract. Because the Blue Jays are toast & we all know Bal & TB aren't going to be in the mix.

I don't think Joe Torre is to blame for the Yankees troubles. I think it clearly falls on Cashman's shoulders. It's becoming pretty clear they made a huge mistake in not getting Diasuke. And even though they've made great strides recently in improving their farm system it's still too little too late IMO. They should've been prepared for Mariano's eventual decline. The Sox have a young stud at closer in Jonathan Papelbon. Overall the pitching youth in Boston is far superior to that in New York. The Sox have proven they can match payrolls with NY, so the Yanks can no longer get away with making a mistake on a FA any more. Not only has Boston closed the gap they've surpassed it in some respects. Certainly they have made their share of mistakes, but overall the combo of Epstein/Luccino has out smarted Brian Cashman in recent years IMO.

Eventhough I don't think this thread is the place to talk this serious about the Yankees woes, I would like to add my opinion.

The fact that the Yankees didn't get Daisuke Matsusaka, I can't call a mistake. This whole bidding is nothing more than a lottery.

Smarting out Cashman? I think that Cashman is at the steering wheel this season for the first time. The last couple of seasons, Cashman was nothing more than Steinbrenner's puppet on a string. Steinbrenner was the one, who wanted Johnson, Damon and a lot of other overprized players. The Yankees have relied on old players too long and now they are paying the price. But like you said, they are improving the farm system. And that is something you can't do within one year. I rather take a few steps back for a couple of years, to rebound for a championship in three or four years.

Ok, since Cashman is "now in charge," how long til after the Yankees season ends (either not making post-season or pulling their 7th straight post-season choke) will it be before Cashman is out? We know Torre is gonna go bye-bye no matter what.

I can't say it's totally Cashman's fault. The Yanks seem primarily going for FA players, since other GMs were looking for Phil Hughes or similar players. It's as if we wanted David Wells, of all people, we'd be asked about Phil Hughes. I may as well trade for a VW Bug, but they want the Lincoln Town Car in return.

I think that Cashman did pretty good this season. I'm not sure how much they bid for Matsuzaka, but it's obvious to me that nobody expected $51.1m to be the winning bid. An extremely high rate by any standards, but nothing that can't be written off at tax time, and not applicable to the 2007 payroll and/or lux taxes.

Cashman re-signed Moose, got Pettitte back as a Yankee, just signed Clemens. I wouldn't have minded one bit had he signed Schilling when Arizona was trading him (Yanks got first shot, but Colangelo wanted Nick Johnson and Alfonso Soriano). I would've lessened the deal a bit, asking if they'd take someone else, but that's not the case.

Cashman isn't responsible for Boston's strong start. I think that this team would've been entirely different had we had someone like Ichiro Suzuki in CF (Yanks didn't bid for him back then), Schilling pitching (we had our chance), Ortiz as the DH (Cashman convinced George not to get him, as we had Johnson & Giambi), but life's not perfect. Then again, you folks could've had A-Rod.

We'll see how well Boston does in mid-May and June. Hopefully, not at the same pace, and the Yanks win quite a few games, letting us creep closer to 1st place. That "distant 2nd place" thing doesn't exactly enthuse me.

I prefer the younger guys. But on the other hand ( I have already said that), it can't get any worse. If Clemens can give us a good season, the youngsters can remain in the shadow at AAA to improve.
