I'm not sure how my discussing a Broadway musical from years ago is "sympathy" towards the BoSox.

Oh well, I guess that's why I'd talked about pitching before. It's great to have all that crazy offense, but when facing the Halladays, Mulders and other big names out there, I consider a run prevented just as valuable, if not moreso, than a run scored.

Manny's not hitting? I need to check the box score out some more. I remember that Nomar was hitting, and Ortiz has been knocking the covers off. Has Manny made GIDPs, whiffs, flyouts or what?

As to Lowe, I was wondering if 2002 was like a career year for him, kind of like Boone's 2001 or Bonds in 2001 or 2002. Both are still red hot bats, but a closer who wasn't too reliable, getting booed often at home, converting into a starter, that may not always work. I now wonder what Toronto's Escobar will do next season. Even Kim wanted to start, but Little had other plans.

You mean when Mueller dropped the ball? I saw it on ESPN, and he either dropped it or held it too long. Everyone was safe, so bummer for you guys.

Like someone else said (one of you guys), I'll wait for the next two outings to see if Suppan's the real deal. Meanwhile, Burkett seems to be your #2 or #3 right now, along with Wakefield. Lowe's supposed to be your #2, but last season's numbers haven't returned.

I'm curious, you guys have Sauerbeck, Williamson and Kim. Why would you hope that Pedro goes 9 every time? With Osuna, Nelson and Mo, I think that 7 should be plenty for our guys.

As to teams that can't hit bad pitching, take a number. The best ones have been scouted, and the lousy ones, our team doesn't do well against. It seems their 7+ ERA goes down by at least 0.50 by the time the game's over. Last time, against Clemens I think, we scored a lot, so one nasty habit slowly fading away.

    • I guess I misconstrued the "tomorrow" bit as "today's over with, go get 'em tomorrow." I guess I should have known better. The humidity is shorting out my synapses.

Manny is something like 3 for his last 28 or something appalling like that. He hasn't hit a home run since July 27 and hasn't had an extra-base hit in about 2 weeks. He strikes out, fouls off fat hangers and looks at strike 3, hits weak fly balls, hits into FCs and DPs... Trot is hitting under .200 in August and Walker's been so weak at the plate he's been dropped to #8 in the order.

Pedro needs to go 9 because he gets no run support and if he does leave with a 1 run lead (if he could have only a 1/2-run lead, that's all he'd get) the bullpen almost always lets him down. He's going to be the best 10-game winner this season.

Oh, yeah -- right after Macbeth's "Tomorrow" soliloquy, he went out and got killed.

I'm the only one who notices that there is about a 1:1 ratio of Cubs to Cards fans at those games in Wrigley. It really pisses me off hearing equal amounts of boos and cheers at the same time. When during any other game, excluding the crosstown games, there are only boos and cheers and never at the same time.

Also, there's too much red in the stands. Put Wrigley in a blender and it'll come out purple.

          • Ah, I was just still bummed about yesterday. Feel slightly better now that the Mariners just edged the Yanks, 2-1.

Looking at the score in game 1, I think that shows my point that you need pitching, not just every offensive stat.

Someone mentioned to me that after the break, Boston has lost their games by over 4 runs, while we're losing 1 or 2 run games. To me, that's pitching. Oh well, they could've had Colon but I guess Fossum was too much to give up. Oh well.
See Matt, sometimes a well-pitched game isn't enough to get the W.
Bottom line is...score at least one more run than your opponent.... Right?

                Well if we're quoting Macbeth;
"The time had been when the brains were out the man would die and there an end. Now they rise again with twenty mortal murderers on their crowns, and push us from our stools. This is more strange than such a murder is."

If you really one to stretch things out you could make a connection to the ghost of the Bambino pushing the Red Sox from their stools (5 titles in 15 years). But I think we can all agree that the Yankees are not mortal murderers.

Hey, Pettitte pitched well today, didn't he? Just *tsk* not quite well enough, huh? Darn.

Well, Gil Meche rocks, what more can I say . There's been talk that if he can keep that shoulder of his healthy, he could be the next Maddux. And Mattingly, our bet goes to the rubber game. Moyer vs. Clemens: the pitching duel of the century. "The Rocket" vs. "The Rocking Chair" Who will win? Moyer WILL win.
