Red Sox fans are always the most fickle of people when their stars leave......in contrast to the ovations Yankee fans give for the former stars when they come back.

Sometimes to the great dismay of the owner [see Reggie Jackson, 1982].

I can only recall two instances when New York fans in general booed someone who had accomplished much in their time in New York but who jumped ship for money and power elsewhere and both were coaches. The Ranger fans booed Mike Keenan endlessly when he first came back to the Garden after breaching his contract and leaving after the 1994 Cup and Knick fans to this day only think of Pat Riley as "Pat The Rat".

I may be wrong, with the recent exception of Robinson Canó, I really can't remember a star player leaving the Yankees for another team, (especially Boston), willing to pay MORE than New York would. The Yankees, since the George Steinbrenner era, have been notorious for paying their star players over the market value to ensure keeping them. (They've always had a virtual endless supply of money sources to do it). That's the reason their star players stay put.

The Red Sox, however, usually set a fixed value on players like Damon. Ellsbury, etc. and refuse to pay over that amount and are willing to let them go.
So when those new Yankee, ex-Red Sox players visit Fenway Park, the fans treat them like the money-hungry traders that they are. - - :joking: +

Um.....how about MIKE TORREZ? He was arguably the "star" pitcher on the Yankee staff in 1977 with his long relief in Game 5 of the ALCS and winning two games of the World Series and he sure got a big contract from the Red Sox that off-season! (but all for the best he helped pitch the Yankees into the World Series again in '78!)

But I really don't think the Red Sox have any business with the size of their payroll (not to mention their 2011 contracts experience) acting like they win by playing Moneyball. They only won when they started to have ownership act more like Yankee ownership and spend more to bring in more.

First off, Reggie's clip isn't about the homerun -- it's about the fans reaction to it. Second, players leave the Yankees for more (and sometimes less) money all the time. I do think GMS3 had a tendency to overpay and, thus by comparison, made the Red Sox look miserly. But let's face facts. The Red Sox, under Henry's ownership, are a BIG MARKET team and spend like one too (2014's 4th largest opening day payroll). The Sox just thought they could spend that money better elsewhere and made a baseball decision. That's life. Get over it. [They were probably saving their "Mike Trout Money" but got burned (re-signed with the LAA for 3 more years).]

If a Yankee I like "moves on..." Well, I'll probably still like him... most days. Even if he plays for Boston.
Oh, and if a player I despise becomes a Yankee... I'm pretty certain I'll still despise him [i.e. "The A-Rod Rule"].

Besides, if you gotta' love that Wade Boggs managed to get a ring... Even if it was with the Yankees.

That said some players stay... regardless of the money.

I agree with most of your comments. But when was the last time a talented Yankee star at the hight of his career jump ship and signed with Boston? I don't remember that happening, maybe, {correction}, I'm sure you'll come up with something that'll prove me wrong.

At what point & salary did Jeter settle for less than his market value and stayed in New York?
Last year at 39 he made $17M at a rate of $1M per game played? This year at 40 he'll make $12M?

Pick out when he '$ettled for less' to stay in NY...

Oh, Ken, I think you should also remember how in the 1998-99 off-season Bernie Williams, just after winning the batting title, was *this* close to signing with the Red Sox when it seemed like the Yankees were going to sign Albert Belle. Fortunately, George came to his senses at the last minute and realized that he hadn't been appreciating Bernie enough and Bernie stayed with the Yankees for a contract pretty much the same as what the Red Sox offered him. If Bernie had gone though, we would have given him due credit and applause his first time back at the stadium in '99.

But like I said before though, Torrez was arguably a "star" when he bolted. If Reggie doesn't hit three homers in Game 6, then Torrez was likely the World Series MVP.
