Petey's now 11-0 v. Seattle. Gave up 1 run on 3 hits over 7IP. A couple times had RISP and got major major strikeouts to preserve the Boston lead.

We still hold the WC lead since Oakland edged the Jays, but Toronto made it interesting in the 9th.

Now, does anyone else out there think the umps are having problems? How about that call at 1b, in the 6th, when Walker hit into a DP that was ruled a FC and RBI? Now, you all know how much a Sox fan I am, but Walker was OUT... and was ruled safe. I don't blame Melvin for blowing his top and getting tossed.

Nacherly I don't mind the result, but it could have gone the other way, too, with the Mariners getting the break.

Anyway... Go Orioles!

The ump was blindsided from that play, VT. He was in the regular position, but since it was a bang bang play, the ball beat the runner by a hair, and the runner was hidding by the 1B fielder. Stuff happens.

I'll need to pump up the volume the next time Petey pitches against the M's, since he seemed too good this afternoon. Ichiro should've had another slam, which would've won the game.

I think he fell a foot shy of the outer circle of the box. He must've been about 4 feet from home, and he couldn't get the job done. I loved that shot of the guys in the home dugout throwing their hands up in the air.

Karim Garcia is our only strong armed RF right now, as David Dellucci's got a great glove but no arm, and Ruben Sierra, in his return to pinstripes, can't track a ball to save his life. Karim was the best choice, and Soriano wisely waited until Cust ran home before throwing the ball.

Mariano suffers a lot from overuse, but I think that rest can do him well. If Joe can force himself from using him in tonight's game (Sunday), he may be OK. He's been scaring the crap out of me, but I still think he'll rebound. I think all those times coming in to bail out Benitez in the 8th inning killed him. I thought a setup man was supposed to bail out the closer.

Word to Joe Torre: rest Mo Rivera, or you'll get the same thing in October *after* Beantown loses the division *and* the WC!

Hey, Ken. Warren Sapp said he'd much rather have an ugly win than a Picasso loss. I agree. That ending was as ugly as you're ever going to get. It's like an ugly pool game that ends with someone scratching on the 8 ball.

Oh well, at least they didn't have a "Yankees Suck" parade in Tampa Bay.

I was just reading about the game in the Globe, and Varitek said that Petey was "under the weather" and didn't have his good stuff. Yeah, I could tell -- the M's scored a run. What a shame he'll miss them at Fenway this week!

The Yankee$, the GREATEST $PORT$ TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF $PORT$ TEAMS, with their $190 MILLION DOLLAR PAYROLL, needed Jack Cust to slip rounding third to avoid the Orioles, who started Jose Leon, Larry Bigbie, Luis Matos (AAA in April), Jose Morban (rule 5 guy who's never played above AA before this year), Deivi Cruz (castoff), Tony Batista (leaving as a FA after this season), Brook Fordyce (given up for dead after last year) and Jay Gibbons (only legitimate ML player in April), who, together, make less than Jason Giambi...tying the game AGAIN, in extra innings...and you people think that the GREATEST $PORT$ TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF $PORT$ TEAMS, with their $190 MILLION DOLLAR PAYROLL, is going ANYWHERE, other than HOME, this October?!?!?!?!?

I was just reading in some old boxscores that Beantown *lost* 3 of 4 to the O's. Well, the Yanks just *won* 3 straight to them. Which would you rather have? 2 wins + one very ugly one, or 3 losses?

Tell the M's that George said he'll lend them the Yankees for the day, since we *do* know how to beat Pedro, or at least win games he's started. We also know how to beat Boston, Oakland and Seattle in October, too. Now it's Arizona we have to work on. :o

Every single team has ugly games. Warren Sapp, of the Super Bowl winning TB Buccaneers, said he'd rather have ugly wins than pretty losses. Michael Jordan when he was with Chicago, said he'd also dealt with ugly wins, and that's part of the game.

It would be nice if you guys would win a few times instead of being in 4th place for the 5th year in a row, so that you could better understand this. Not every victory is pretty, and some losses are tough, by 1 or 2 runs. It happens, and you just try winning as many as possible. Right now, I see 3 games straight won by the Yankees, so that's 3 straight in the "L" column for Baltimore.

I'm not so sure about that $190m payroll, unless you happen to believe everything that Yankee-hating Gammons or McCarver write.

My point got missed, but that's not much of a surprise, so let me try again:
The team with the highest payroll in the history of baseball...the team with the most wins in the AL...needed a freak play miracle to BARELY squeek by a team of kids and castoffs making less than your DH...not to mention that they got wasted by the Royals last week.
I don't really care that we're going to finish fourth again THIS YEAR...that trend is coming to it's conclusion. Important structural changes have been made in the O's front office, and as long as we don't do something REALLY STUPID, like fire Hargrove, this is a team on the rise.
The Cash Machine, on the other hand is going to be sorely lacking in the one attribute money has trouble buying: young, quality pitchers.
The rotation is 150 years old. The bullpen is among the worst in the AL (save for Rivera)...the owner is still a meddelsome windbag...the crows are on their way home...and it'll be an extreme pleasure to see them roost.

With their payroll don't you think after their rotation retires they'll buy some new pitchers? They'll go after the best ones in the game because they can. They've done it before. In a few years their rotation could have Prior, Beurhle, Mulder, Oswalt, and Morris.
