  • Biggest Announcer mistake ever?

During the Reds/D-backs game Wednesday, Encarnacion failed to get a sac bunt down after multiple attempts. The following exchange happened. I believe the Color Commentator was Jeff Brantley and the play-by-play guy was Thom Brennaman.)

CW:Take [Encarnacion] out of the game! He can't bunt, take him out of the game.

    [Debating about bunting]

JB:This guy is not a clutch hitter. He is not a clutch hitter.

TB:His numbers would be contrary to that.

JB:He is not a clutch hitter.
    And then, this happened.

TB: 2-2 pitch.....Hammered down the LF line!!!!........... Is it Clutch? REDS WIN!!!! Encarnacion, a three run big fly, bottom of the ninth inning!

    [Long Pause]

    JB:I stand corrected!
The only place I can find the complete video is FJM, and the post it's with is NSFW. It has to be the funniest sports media screwup (Journalism, broadcasting, you name it) that I've ever seen.

That was Thom Brennaman (pbp) and Jeff Brantley (color). I will tell you, Edwin is not usually clutch in April (he's a slow starter) and Edwin can't bunt period so I understand Brantley's frustration with Edwin. I will tell you, even though I told the guy I was sitting with at that game that Edwin would hit a HR, I surely didn't believe it when it happened.

Unlike most other team sports, in which teams usually have an equivalent number of players on the field at any given time, in baseball the hitting team is at a numerical disadvantage, with a maximum of 5 players and 2 base coaches on the field at any time, compared to the fielding team's 9 players. For this reason, leaving the dugout to join a fight is generally considered acceptable in that it results in numerical equivalence on the field, and a fairer fight.

Ah, thanks for the correction. While I can see his frustration, taking a 100+ OPS+ guy out of the game because he can't lay down a bunt is a tad bit extreme.

Had to laugh on opening day 1979. Rico Petrocelli was doing his first game as Red Sox broadcaster. In the first inning, he said something like, "Pop up to Burleson [the shortstop], it's out to Yastrzemski, it's off the wall." It was a double rocketed to left-center.

Well, Jeff Brantley has been taking heat from his fellow broadcasters but always response with: "If I have to be wrong, that's a good time."

You could probably fill this entire thread with quotes from the most enjoyable brodcaster NY ever had, the irreplacable Phil Rizzuto.
                  "what just happened White ?"
& on being an unabashed homer -
"You've gotta be partial up here. Or is that impartial ?"

Lately I saw a shot of him, introducing himself with his co-announcer's name.

Take out the words mistake,of,nature and add a certain word and that best describes Kay.

I most remember Rizzuto's announcing for a stupid comment he made after Pope John Paul I died in 1978. The death was mentioned during the game. After the game, Rizzuto again mentioned the pope's passing and said something like, "That's the kind of thing that can put a damper on even a Yankee win."

Biggest announcer mistake ever? The answer to this question has got to involve John Sterling, the Yankees radio guy. Has to. The man has called home runs that have been caught for outs at least half a dozen times in the last few years. It usually goes like this: "It is high, it is far, it is gone!!!! Oh wait they're saying he caught it." I love how he says "they're saying" like he's trying to put some doubt in the listeners minds about who made the right call.

The Yankees announcers on TV and radio are just terrible. Michael Kay is an ass. His radio show is unlistenable. Maybe the worst bit of radio that I've ever heard was when Kay compared not talking about Wang's perfect game to not talking about what the nazi's were doing to the Jews in WW2. He really did.

The Yankees color guys are pretty good, except Paul O'neill. I really miss Jim Kaat. My favorite TV team after Rizzuto and White was Kaat, Ken Singleton, and Bobby Murcer. Jim Kaat said whatever he wanted and was no shill for the Yankee's front office.

I told you not to be stupid you moron.

I watch a couple games on YES when I'm in New York, and Michael Kay really annoys me. But Ken Singleton was actually very good. I really enjoyed listening to him. Not a homer, no stupid catchphrases, and most of what he said was very intelligent.
