I thought Bill Bean came out (after his playing days)
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

Correct. He wrote a very interesting book about his experience with being gay and how he hid his sexuality until after he retired.

I would bet my house that there were many others that either never came out or haven't come out yet.

There are gays in ALL pro sports, just as there are in all facets of the 'real world'. They just haven't 'come out'.

Anyone remember when a gay hustler said in the press that he had a lover that was a star player on a popular eastcoast team? There probally been many gay players but it would be too hard to come out in a bussiness like professional sports, they would just get way too much abuse from players and fans. It's sad but true.

Which shows that homosexualism is still not generally accepted in American society.

In Dutch soccer there were several gay players who came out during their career.

Is it about the quality of the player or what?

Homosexuallity is still a hot button issue in the states, I personally see it as a bit overblown and stupid. I honstly don't see the big deal, I know allot of gay people and dosen't play any effect in the way I think of them. But I see it as being a huge deal in American Pro sports, if a player was openly gay. I think it should be the quality of that matters too.

                    Not really.
A few years ago the NY Post printed a 'blind' item on Page Six (it's gossip page) that caused an uproar.
It appeared to 'out' Mike Piazza and suggested a relationship with the newscaster Sam Champion.
I don't think anybody really thought Mike was 'that way', but it was nessasary for him to hold a news conference 'comming out' as straight.
Mike is and was about as loved and adored as any NY player has ever been. Despite that, I don't think fans would have embraced him if the rumors were true.
Then again, I may be underestimating people. I have a hard time believing that Yankee fans would not still revere Derek Jeter if he publicly came out as a homosexual.

LOL Yes. What would you have done after holding a news conference like that ? LOL. Oh the poor guy ! The Post kissed his rear all over town after that mess.
The sad part is, I'm not so sure many don't still look at him with a raised eyebrow.

OK. Let me put it this way: It should be about the quality of the player.

If a player is gay or not, should not matter. It is his private life, so nobody's business.

I agree totally, it shouldn't matter but it does! Like it shouldn't matter what a player's race, religion or ethnicity is. But, if a player came out even a well liked great player he risks being shunned and abused, that's why the players that are gay have only came out after the have retired.

I could really careless what a player does in his personal life, it's like if he likes big huge fat women, I don't like big huge fat women I don't care that he loves big huge fat women I just care how he plays. Hell, if the Yanks can get a great pitcher I don't care if he likes fat chicks, gay or whetever heck I don't care if he wears purple lipstick and eyeliner as long as he pitches good!!!!.....God we need pitching help.
