  • Best ALL-SON Team

I was thinking last night about who has been considered as the best players among sons of major leaguers. The obvious choice for #1 would have to be Barry Bonds. I have to give the devil his due here. I can't stand the guy, but I would certainly name him as the best 'son' in major league history. His father, Bobby, was no slouch either but, since he was not the son of a big leaguer, he can't be on my team.

Naming a team of fathers, rather than sons, might be easier, since there were some players who were so great that teams decided to give their sons a shot at the big time, figuring that just maybe they were half as good as Dad (Ed Walsh Jr, the Sislers, etc). No, I only wants sons here.

I have my thoughts, of course, but will withhold my vote for now. Who do you think would field the best all-time team among players who were the sons of other major leaguers? Please list your team by position. This sounds like it could be fun.

Okay, besides the obvious Bonds, I'll chip in another one, just to keep my hand in: 3B: Buddy Bell.

Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. Nice strength at catcher. Add Terry Kennedy to that group.

I'm pretty sure that Prince Fielder will end up as the #1 son at 1B.

Add Justin Speier to the relievers.

You like Bret Boone better than Robby Alomar???

I was disappointed to find out that Sonny Siebert was NOT the son of Dick Siebert. Dick did have a son, Paul, who briefly pitched in the majors.

I guess I can add a couple I had in mind.

Most of mine have been named, of course. Here is how my team stacks up:

1B: Prince Fielder (I admit I was thinking either Nick Swisher or David Segui, but upon further review...)
2B: Robby Alomar (Can Robinson Cano ever unseat him? Doubtful)
SS: Cal Ripken, Jr (How did you guys miss HIM??)
            3B: Buddy Bell
            RF: Moises Alou
            CF: Ken Griffey, Jr
            LF: Barry Bonds
            C: Bob Boone
SP: Todd Stottlemyre (What a sorry crop of starting pitchers our major league sons make!! Dreadful choices.
            Closer: Robb Nen

Pretty good crop of catchers. For a while it looked as though Todd Hundley may have been one of the better sons, but....

Too bad Bobby Crosby can't stay healthy. Doesn't much matter though. No one can unseat Ripken at shortstop.

Except that Cal Sr. never played in the major leagues. He managed the Orioles for a while, coached for a long time, but never got one game in as a player.

Jeez, when guys like Jaret Wright, Darren Oliver and Jim Bagby Jr. make up most of your starting rotation, your team is going to need Barry Bonds (*)^9 .

Brian Bannister is still young, but he might make a good #4 or #5 starter.

Mike Hegan, son of Indians catcher Jim Hegan, played 1st base and some outfield I believe, for the Pilots, Brewers and A's. He might make this team as a reserve at least.

With Alomar, Bonds, Griffey, Alou and Fielder, 2-6 in the lineup, the pitching staff available could still get that team to the playoffs...maybe.
