  • Wassup in your softball league?

After our first-game rainout, mine started tonight. I looked all around and couldn't find my new glove, so I had to make do with the old one. Surprisingly, after stints at 1B & C, they've got an older me back in the outfield. The glove thing might have come into play when I couldn't hold one (I remembered one place I didn't look, and found the glove tonight). But right now it's the twilight zone, my fielding average is zero and my batting average is a THOUSAND (usually it's the other way around). Well, my error didn't lead to an enemy score (nor did my collision with another outfielder on a ball we weren't sure either would get to - other guy held onto it). Bottom line, we won and allowed only five runs.

We won our first two games on Sunday, 19-6 and 22-3 (IIRC )

I played the first game at 1B and the second in CF. Our shortstop and I had a moment like Nate McLouth and Jason Bay on Opening Day in Atlanta when the ball dropped right between us :o Actually I could have easily made the catch, but I anticipated he'd call for it until the last moment. Again IIRC, it didn't lead to a run.

The field was wet last night but we played anyway. My team didn't start out too bad but then we kept allowing runs and not getting many back. We were being blown out 14-4 then scored a handful in the last inning but it wasn't enough.
The bat that I used last week wasn't there at the beginning. I started with a bat I ended up not liking, popped up and put the bat back. Tried a different bat, plate app 2 was better. I hit a nice line drive to left center but it kept hanging up and the LC center came in and snagged it. Plate app 3 was what I was hoping for, a line-drive hit that brought in a run. Plate app 4 was a high pitch I shouldn't have chased and of all things hit on top of it. It squibbed to the pitcher & it got away from him. So with bats that I like, with either hitting it well or getting on base, I'm five-for-five.

Unless it's co-ed, why play softball? There are MSBL leagues all across the country that play real fast-pitch baseball. It's a lot more challenging which means it's a lot more rewarding when you do well. I encourage everyone to look into it, maybe watch a few games to see what it's like. Also, You don't have to be an ex-college superstar to play. I do well even though I hadn't played since little league. Although there's nothing wrong with softball, I just thought I'd let people know that there is an alternative.

I played NABA baseball near Chicago and in the Granite State League in NH. Then, my wife and I had a child, and I played for one more year and quit, because my life wasn't working with baseball in it. Some of the games would take a minimum of 6 hours out of a weekend day, with an hour drive each way to someplace like Methuen (MA), Laconia, or Ashland, an hour to warm up, and a 3 hour game, if we were lucky. If I had two games in a weekend, the whole weekend was shot. I play softball in the same town I live in, the games take about an hour, and the commute time is virtually zero.
I love to play baseball, and it really kills me that the NH league I used to play in is now a wood bat league...I love real bats, and have a bunch in the basement. But, I just will not neglect my family in that way to indulge in my fantasies. I see that my old team now has games in Claremont, NH, which has got to be a two hour drive for most of the guys. I don't know how they do it.
I'm just saying it's not as simple as just finding a baseball league to play in for a lot of people...for me, softball is an inferior, but practical, substitute.

In our first SP game, we got slaughtered. I hit two balls hard to either side of the SS that I reached on (not sure what happened, no throws), and then lined one over SS that carried far enough for the LFer to make a shoestring catch on. I also had two balls hit over my head in LF that I did not go back on very well...they were right over me, which always gives me fits. I need just a little angle!!
In our second game, we got slaughtered. I pulled my back on a warmup swing (yes, I'm old), but managed to hit a nice liner first time up, unfortunately right to SS. I was able to run, but had another ball hit over my head that I did get a bead on...and I couldn't turn to run and keep my eye on the ball with my hurt back! I tried to backpedal and blew it. I did come in nicely on ball later for a catch, because that didn't hurt like hell. My last two at bats were disastrous because I couldn't twist at all. Should have asked out of the game, honestly. And, my team needs to have a BP session so I can shag some flies and get my LF mojo back.

We're 2-2 so far. In the 2 wins we've scored 22 and 23 runs. In the losses we've scored 2 and 3. I don't get it. When one hits, we all hit or no one hits at all. Playing softball is bittersweet for me. I love baseball so much, it's almost cheesy to see myself playing softball. There are so many elements of the game that aren't in softball---and the parts that are missing are the one's that make it such an amazing game. Oh well, it's all I got left so I'll take it.
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. ~Rogers Hornsby

Off for Memorial Day ,then off when taking my mother-in-law into the hospital. Two for three, with my out being a line drive that the 2B ran over to and barely speared. Now seven for ten on the season

Yeah, it's been a rough stretch, first time I've played since last post. First time up, a single that the LF bobbled into a double. A fly to Left center that wasn't all that deep, I went back to tag up. I probably would have been nailed but the throw got by 3B, went out of play & I scored. One of their batters wants to test the new defensive guy. He hits a low liner and I come in on it from RF. I might have got it standing up but I wanted a better base so I slid and pulled it off the ground. Next time up, I almost swung at the first offering but it ended up bad. Next pitch I probably should have swung at, it was close, so I back off like it was way off. Ump calls it a ball. It worked last time so I try it again, and I have my walk. Like I told my team, MUCH better to be lucky than good

Quarterfinals tonight. We win and we get to play in the same stadium that a professional women's team does :crossfingers:
