  • 2008 "Take me out to the ballgame" stamp

We all know that this year is the 100th anniversary of "Take me out to the ball game." What are some of your thoughts on this great looking stamp? I know I'll be buying them in bulk.

It's a nice stamp, but don't buy too many of 'em (unless you want them for collecting)... the postage rate will probably go up next year. Changes in regulations allow the Postal Service to raise the postage rate every year based on the rate of inflation without having to get approval from the Postal Rate Commission as was the case in the past.
Please help. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer last summer, and now I'm in a position where I need financial assistance. For the full story, please check out my GoFundMe campaign at https://gofund.me/3874ea2d. Thank you.

Personally, I would have focused on the fans, or at least had a better vantage of them in the picture. The song is, after all, from a fan's point of view.

Why does the 42 have a slash in it?

Jonathan Neil Roger Anthony Ray Thomas Art Don
Gates Philip John Warrior Rik Casey Tony Horace

So that the photo won't be mistaken for a real stamp.

As taken from the usps.com website:
One of the most popular baseball songs of all time, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2008 on postage late this summer. For decades, the song’s catchy chorus has been part of the musical tradition at ballparks around the country, especially during the seventh-inning stretch. The song was born on a New York City train in the summer of 1908, when passenger Jack Norworth — an actor, singer and songwriter who had never attended a major-league ball game — penned the words after seeing a sign about an upcoming game at the Polo Grounds.

The stamp image is based on a circa-1880 “trade card” from the personal collection of art director Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, AZ. The original card shows a baseball scene and contains words promoting a product made by a Michigan company. The stamp art shows the same scene but replaces the product-related words with “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” the stamp denomination, notes from the music, and the words “United States of America.”

I wonder how much of an actual issue something like that is. You hear about someone passing off fake million dollars bills every so often. (as opposed to real ones.) With stamp prices rising, I'm sure there's counterfeit stamps out there.

FYI, the name of the person who wanted to be taken out to the ball game was Casey. Katie Casey. That's where she wanted to go on a date instead of the usual. A whole different kind of striking out potential, eh?

Anyone interested in learning more about this issue from a stamp collectors' perspective would do well to check out the thread devoted to this stamp at the message board of the Virtual Stamp Club. It's just like Baseball Fever except that it's about stamps.
