  • Let's Make a Major League! (Phase II: Team Locations)

The huge turnout in the Phase I poll to determine the league structure resulted in overwhelming support for a 28-team league split into two conferences, each of which consists of two 7-team divisions. This would be comparable to the alignment of the actual MLB in 1993.

Phase II of the project to make our own major league is to select location for teams. Included in the poll above are all metro areas in the US and Canada with a population of at least one million, as well as a few Mexican and Caribbean cities thrown in for variety. Your job is to select 28 locations where you'd like teams to be sited. Make sure to count your checkmarks before submitting your vote! If you'd like one or more teams to be in locations not listed in the poll, check "Other" and write them in (and make sure you select fewer than 28 of the named locations in the poll).

Note: The three largest US metros (New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago) are listed twice in the poll. Select 1st team if you'd like there to be only one team in that metro, and select both 1st team and 2nd team if you'd like there to be two teams in that metro. Remember that two teams in one metro still count as two of the total 28 teams.

Thanks for voting, jnakamura. Just out of curiosity, how would you arrange your picks into four 7-team divisions? One problem I see is that you have eight teams on the Pacific Coast.

OK, but you only selected 16 locations -- 17, including Madison. The idea was to pick 28. I also notice that none of your picks are locations where teams in the real MLB currently reside. Was this intentional?

He may have thought we were creating a third ML

EDIT: What will be the next round, DJC? Team names? Division location organization?

So it would seem. The next round -- assuming we actually get there -- would be geographical arrangement of teams in their divisions, although by then it could be obvious how the teams should best be arranged. Waiting for a few dozen more votes....

I am going in the direction of expanding into the Latin countries, which is why I selected Mexico, DR, and PR. I also voted for some more southern locations as opposed to northern, because of climate reasons.

I didn't participate in Phase I, but I'm okay with the 28 team, 2 conference set up. I would have preferred a promotion/relegation system, but that choice lost out.

Portland and Montreal each have as many votes as both Florida teams combined.

Thanks for voting, but Bigfoot 88, you have one too many teams, and chicagowhitesox1173, you have one too few teams. Which location would you like to drop and add, respectively?

That's the POV I was working from, a third league. Obviously, I misunderstood! Sorry about that. If you want me too (and if it's not too much bother) remove my votes and I"ll go back in and re-do my picks and get the full amount in there.

Well, you can't actually change what options you voted for in a poll on this site, if that's what you meant. It'd probably be best if you just listed the 28 locations in a post here.

Thanks for voting, newcomers. Bulldog19, you only picked 27 locations. Which one do you want to add?

So far it's looking like Oakland & Tampa should be contracted and MLB should shift to two conferences/leagues each with two divisions. Since this would put 16 in the NL and 12 in the AL, more than just the Astros would have to move from the NL to the AL. So we'll make the Diamondbacks the 2nd NL team to move to the AL.

NL West: Giants, Dodgers, Padres, Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, Brewers
NL East: Phillies, Mets, Nationals, Marlins, Braves, Reds, Pirates

AL West: Mariners, Angels, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Astros, Royals, Twins
AL East: Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays, Indians, Tigers, White Sox

                            Schedule:
                            54 3 game series
Five series against each team in your own division (30 series or 90 games)
Two series against six teams in your league's other division and three against one (15 series or 45 games)
One series against each team in one of the other league's divisions (7 series or 21 games)
Two series against a designated geographical non-league rival (e.g. Dodgers vs. Angels) - (2 series or 6 games)
Holding a pitcher accountable for how many runs his team scores is like holding the designated hitter accountable for how many runs his team allows.

An individual statistic is meaningful only if it is based strictly on what the player does and not on what the other players on his team do.

Contrary to what most baseball fans claim, a pitched ball which is hit into play is not a strike.
