  • Players who should have changed numbers...

I'm watching the Home Run Derby, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why Mark Trumbo doesn't wear the number 76.

Doug Adams played for the 1969 White Sox. He wore 32, not 42...

Ricky Sweet wore 2, 45, and 8, but never the obvious 16.

    Any others out there?

To be fair, Hitchhiker's Guide doesn't debut until 1978.

As I recall, Vance Law started spring training with #55. When he was called up to the big leagues, somehow he got #49, and then the next year he was reissued #2. Some thought that he should have kept #55 because "55 was the law." (Speed limit was 55 in those days).

Al Kaline should have had a higher number than 6.

          Jason Bay should dump 44.

I'm not sure I get this joke. Is it supposed to be a play on "76 Trombones"?

At least Dusty Baker *does* wear #12.

                Yeah, but a baker's dozen is 13.

Aaaaaah. Thanks. The trombones. I think you must have guessed right. Otherwise, I have no clue either.

Very cool. Now try these out on back of the Mets:

                    Dillon Gee - #3

                    Chris Young - #39 (forever...)

                    Pedro Beato #3/4

Also, since a dickey is a faux article of clothing, R.A. Dickey should wear #4.

And on the Red Sox, can't resist:

                    Jarrod Saltalamacchia - #3.14...

Yep, Kaline's number should have been 19. (There would have been real chemistry there..)

Nellie Fox should have worn #5. Am I doing it right?

Pie Traynor would have been another good one for 3.14

Enos Slaughter was meant to wear 5.

Then again, Mike Jackson would have been a natural for 5, too.

Heinz Becker never got to wear 57, for some reason.

                            Good ones, Gee!

Meanwhile, here's some more current player number changes, hopefully for reasons you can discern:

                            CC Sabathia - 7

Nick Swisher (or Jayson Nix) – 0

                            Brandon Phillips -76

                            Pete Rose - 7/11
