  • How to use Twitter baseball-style?

When I watch games, regardless of team, often the broadcasters will mention some kind of poll taking place which you can take part in via Twitter. They usually say something like "tweet back to us with the hash tag" and then give a hashtag, like #SNYMets or something like that.

So my question is - remember, I've never used Twitter in my life - how exactly do I DO this?

For example: If I'm watching, say, a Mets game, and Gary and the boys give a poll or trivia question which I'm supposed to tweet back to them with an answer (such as, "who's the Mets career hits leader"), how exactly do I go about following those instructions? Apparently I just put that hashtag they asked me to use, somewhere in the tweet. Okay, I got that. But do I also have to mention the actual Twitter account that SNY uses? (offhand I can't remember what SNY's Twitter account is) Or do I use one of the broadcasters' Tweets? I don't know what those are either. And they don't give them during the broadcast. Although the YES guys talk about Twitter a lot, sometimes they give their tweet 'handles'.

Also, sometimes I'll see things during games which just mentions a hashtag and nothing else. For example if you watch a Nats game, it will say #NATITUDE on the backstop behind the batter. What am I supposed to do with THIS? Just put it in a tweet for no reason? If so, what happens when people read my tweet with this in it?

For the hashtag tweets, you don't have to mention the SNY account. You can search Twitter by hashtag and for that sort of stuff, usually if they want you to tweet in with #baseball or whatever they'll search that for good tweets.

Hash tags are kind of like quickly created categories to help people find your Tweet. Like, I might Tweet, "I'm voting for Ralph Nader! #election2012". Then people who search for #election2012 will see my tweet come up. Companies can pay Twitter to reserve hashtags for their own marketing purposes or whatever, but they're really no rhyme or reason to it as anybody can add whatever hashtag they want to any Tweet and you can make silly ones like #willjamiemoyerevergetto300winsprobablynot or whatever.

As for the team specific hashtags you see, they're just trying to drum up social networking for their team. If you were a Nationals fan and you wanted other Nationals fans to see your Tweets, you know that the team is promoting #NATITUDE so you would drop that in there. Because it's all over the place, #NATITUDE tweets will probably have a lot of Nationals fans using it, and you know it will be more baseball specific than tweets about #nationals (which could be about Mexican nationals or something, who knows) or #washington.

Funny baseball Tweet from last year Marlins OF Logan Morrison:

[Jack] McKeon asked me what I had going on tonite. Told him I was going home 2 play w/ Twitter. He replied "oh, what kind of dog is it?"

Last year I ran into a friend at Citi Field whom is a Mets blogger and avid Twitter user who tweets about Mets related issues.

Anyway after finishing our in person conversation we had a phone text message conversation, I texted that I was in the Delta Suites, and she asked how I ended up in there, I texted:

Got in from a friend, it's just a one time thing.
        #BriefTasteofLuxury
Oh wait, this isn't Twitter, why am I hashtagging?

Ha! I've actually seen the hashtag thing start to infiltrate Facebook and other message boards, where of course it has no functionality. But, I guess it is saying something about Twitter's effect on pop culture.

There are some forms of hashtaging that are a bit annoying. A year ago Sony began the promotion for their Amazing Spider-Man movie, that came out this summer, by putting #AmazingSpiderMan on the teaser poster.

Now, I understand the hashtag for things that are pretty darn specific such as #Naitude or #RedSoxNation or something, but since ASM is still very much the current comic book home for the character Spider-Man, I'm sure people, not knowing about the movie hashtag, or in spite, could use that hashtag when Tweeting about the book, not the movie. So that could skewer the Amazing Spider-Man conversation, how many hashtags were for the movie, and how many were for the comic book?

During tonight's Mets game, Gary posed a question and specifically directed tweeters to use the handle @snytv AND the hashtag #snymets....

I assume this means that you would put the @snytv the very first thing in your tweet, but the #snymets could go anywhere. Am I right?

Yes. Using @SNYTV means you are tweeting to, or at, them, and they will notice that they got "mentioned" in a tweet that you wrote. I'm guessing @SNYTV is the catch-all handle for SNY in general, so adding Mets in a hash tag lets whomever is in charge of the account know easier whether the tweet was meant for the booth, or just someone mentioning SNYTV for the heck of it or asking any sort of SNY related question.

Actually, you don't even have to start with @SNYTV or end the tweet with a Hashtag. You could just write it like:

Hey Gary, Keith, Ron and the rest of @SNYTV #SNYMets crew, what's up in Pepsi Porch?

There was some high school on the east coast where this writer always used the hashtag #Mariners and that was annoying because I don't care about high school volleyball.

Hashtags work. I once noticed 28 viewing my Mariners' Back to the Future thread! A good way to spread the word!!!

I find it abhorrent that Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez aren't on twitter. Those two are such cut-ups on the air...they would OWN Twitter within a week!

And thanks to everyone who gave tips. I've become a Twitter user because of baseball.
