There actually was a few good cuts on his 2004 album. He did a cover of "Common People" (originally done by Pulp). Ben Folds co-produced it and sung in it and it was actually pretty good.

I grew up watching all forms of Star Trek with my dad so Shat will always be the man to me.

I knew about that cover song. Shatner most read the lyrics while Ben Folds did the actual singing.

I am also a Star Trek fan.

When he sang songs like that back in the 70's was he trying to be serious or funny? I would have to think that he was trying to be funny.
"(Shoeless Joe Jackson's fall from grace is one of the real tragedies of baseball. I always thought he was more sinned against than sinning." -- Connie Mack

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

Hey, I'll bet he was way better than Spock singing about Bilbo Baggins.

Have you seen the clip of Shatner on one of the late night talk shows "singing" Cee Lo's F*** You song?

William Shatner has a couple of albums out where he does some very strange takes on some rock Classics including the Beatles' "Lucy In the Sky With diamonds' and a hilarious version of Bob Dylan's 'Mr. Tambourine Man'. - Plus he's had a few classic appearences on Howard Stern's radio show. You can't say that Captain Kirk isn't a fun-loving guy!

I'm actually an older guy who's seen the Star Trek stuff and his run at TJ Hooker... He's brutal. He can't act his way out of a wet bag and even though I haven't read his books, that's not what he's held in such high regard for. I've been to some of these Sci-Fi shows in Philly and NY... it's twisted how he's held as a major icon. Maybe I just don't get it.
Shatner's not the best actor on the planet, but he's far from the worst. He's got a self-deprecating sense of humor about this and a great oddball sense of humor in general. He's harmless and I applaud the success he's had in life.

To paraphrase what Sir Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter said to Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in "The Silence Of The Lambs":
"Ben, you need to get more fun out of life".

this thread has almost NOTHING to do with baseball

24 posts and only one mentions baseball

if it was about Buster Posey it would be moved or cancelled
                      1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

According to all reports Mr. Shatner had great stuff and great pitching form for an 81-year-old Canadian. (See Above Photo).

As far as I know Captain Kirk never made any references to baseball. However, Captain Sisko (Deep Space Nine) was a huge baseball fan. In fact there was an entire episode of Deep Space Nine where baseball was part of the main plot. Sisko challenges a former Vulcan Starfleet classmate to a baseball game. The episode is pretty funny as most of Sisko's teammates had never played baseball before. The Vulcan team routes Sisko's team 10-1.

The Great Jim Varney? Most actors don't measure up to Jim Varney - that's an awfully high bar!
