  • How do the fans of a baseball team benefit from their team winning the World Series?

Putting aside bragging rights, how do the fans of a particular team benefit if their team wins the championship?

Let's say I were an Indians fan. Unless I have some kind of financial or emotional investment in the Indians - or if I enjoy rooting for the underdog - it would bring me no more satisfaction to see them win the World Series than it would be to see the Yankees win the World Series.

Perhaps others can share their feelings on this.
Holding a pitcher accountable for how many runs his team scores is like holding the designated hitter accountable for how many runs his team allows.

An individual statistic is meaningful only if it is based strictly on what the player does and not on what the other players on his team do.

Contrary to what most baseball fans claim, a pitched ball which is hit into play is not a strike.

If I one puts down hundreds (or thousands) for tickets or merchandise or anything else that helps to sign the players they are rooting for, you had better believe they have a legit stake and rooting interest in the matter.

But of course the emotional investment is the biggest factor. When the Cards got knocked out in game 7, my first thought was "Wow, I just wasted 7 months of my life. Just think of all of the productive things I could have done with those countless hours of game watching."

Of course if I had no emotional investment in a team I wouldn't care if they won - I am not even sure what you mean by that.

The benefit I receive is the joy of watching the team I have followed since 1976 win a second World Series title in my lifetime. In the grand scheme of things it is minor of course. I am amused by the whiny sour pusses complaining about silly TV ratings and that since their team didn't win the World Series then the team that did win obviously sucks.
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

How is the time spent any more wasted if your team does well but doesn't win the World Series?

The money and time spent at games buying tickets and buying merch gives every fan plenty of stake in rather a team wins or loses.

Other than the team name, the city they play in (or represent) and their team colors, how are the Giants of 2010 & 2012 the same team as the late '70s Giants team which toiled in the NL West basement with the likes of Johnnie LeMaster, John Montefusco, Jack Clark, Terry Whitfield, Gary Lavelle and Ed Halicki?

WOW you don't get it do you?

The Giants have been a huge part of my life. People associate me with them, because of my passion. Anyone who has more more than one favorite team, can't possibly rejoice in the championship, because they did not go through all the valleys. I grew up in a baseball family, where being a fan was a way of life. I've recieved a number of phone calls and e-mails tonight, because people know that it's important to me, that Giants won.

If you have to ask what a fan gets out of their team winning, then you don't understand the emotional investment of being a fan of a team. When I talk of the Giants, I always use the term "we". I am part of the "we."

                GO GIANTS I'm so happy

If your team (I guess the Rays) wins the World Series, how are you paid back for your money and time? Actually, you probably end up spending more money & time if the Rays have a good post season run than if they don't make the playoffs.

The emotional high and the bragging rights as well as the fact if and when the Rays won a WS a jump in budget would be likely.

But other than the team name and the city where they play (or represent), it's difficult to identify the 2010 & 2012 Giants with the cellar dwelling Giants of the late '70s.

I prefer to look at it as one long narrative between a team and its town. There are ups and downs and moments of great sorrow and moments of great triumph. What do the 1980's and 2000s Cardinals have to do with the 1990's Cardinals? They were there in backdrop of every important moment of my life.

I don't think there is any pleasing/winning with you.

If you were a Rays fan and saw what i did in 2011 or 2008 you would know the highs and then the lows of the pre-2008 season struggles.
