  • Astros ask Bagwell to retire

Jeff Bagwell intends to play for the Astros this season, but the team isn't sure that's the best financial decision.

The Astros are asking Bagwell to retire

You thread title is very misleading. Asking a guy to retire is not the same thing as saying he retired. Bagwell makes it plain he is going to try to play next year.

That's pretty heavy. If your team is asking you to retire ... that's telling you something. Man, that's a hefty blow to someone that has, in many ways, carried the franchise for a very long time. They should be little bit more open to using him in a utility/platooning role.

At least I think so. But, then, job performance is job performance. If a person is not performing at a high level at their job, routinely missing a lot of days, they get fired. So, from that standpoint, I can see why they would ask him to step down. Makes sense.

          I can see both sides.

That is bs. I totally respect Jeff Bagwell and his desire to still play. He said he "will" be there in spring trainging unless some injury prohibits him. If the guy wants to play and can, then let him. I'd love to see Bags go somewhere else.

I wouldn't. He and Biggio have been the face of that organization for the last decade and half. How many active guys have spent their entire career of at least a decade with one team other than those two? Big Frank, Chipper, Smoltz, Jeter...
              Johnson and now Goligoski gone.
              I hope that's all.

as an astros fan and bagwell fan this is sure ugly, i've been waiting all off season and most of last year just to see him come back and do what he does. I think this is really telling us the astros want to see Lance berkman go back to his natural position of first base, especially in light of what happened an off season ago, to protect his knee. with the aquisition of preston wilson this offseason the froont office was clearly preparing for making that change, they didnt pick up preston wilson to bump the near rookie of the year taveras out of his spot. although they could use some more offensive power there. Anyway it goes I see the Astros as a better team this year offensively. In my opinion they owe it to bags to let him try and play for everything he has given to the organization. Also let it be known that his salary is large this year because of his willingness to defer money to help improve the team.
