  • Questions for fans of teams playing far away from where they live

Since about the only team that I know of which has about 6 states that are local to it would be the Red Sox, and by extension all over, comprising "Red Sox Nation", I'm wondering how fans in towns other than their team's own became fans of that team. Did they relocate because of school? Or did they become a fan of a team when they went to school and rooted for their college's local pro team?

I'm interested in knowing not only how you folks became fans of that team, but how you follow the news about your not-so local team. If you're in a baseball town of another MLB team, how do you feel when your preferred team plays your local team?

If anyone grew up being a fan because of a minor league affiliate, please bring that up as well.

I've known Yankee fans who lived in California, Georgia, Ohio, Texas and all over, and it's always been an interesting thread when that was brought up. Shared experiences and different ways of getting "local talk" from far away have always been good to hear. So let's hear it, baseball fans from all over!

    Thanks.

I"m an A's fan, going back to the days of Rickey and Dave Henderson, the Eck, Bob Welch, Carney Lansford, Terry Steinback, etc. Lots of good guys on those squads.

I saw the Red Sox and the Jays in 1978..it was my first game. I've been a Sox fan ever since.

Yaz and Rice both hit home runs.

Did you live in Oakland back then? Do you live there now?

I remember Charlie Finley, Reggie Jax, Sal Bando, Rollie Fingers, Bert Campaneris, Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter. Those were one interesting bunch. Tell me more about them.

Yeah, but were you living in Boston at the time, or far away?

I'm too young to remember these guys in playing form (I'm only 25).

I just loved seeing the dominance of Dave Stewart and Bob Welch on the hill, with Eckersley coming in to close it off, man... Eric Plunk wasn't that bad in middle-relief, either. THAT'S a name not many remember.

Rickey led the WORLD in steals almost every year back when a stolen-base title meant something. Don Baylor was still taking them in the rear (insert sick joke HERE). Canseco was on 'roids but no one knew, and we loved him. McGwire and Canseco, well, let's just say they did more than share a bathroom stall a time or two. The Bash Brothers were the glam guys of my childhood years. We still do the Bash playing Wiffle(R) ball in my league. Carney Lansford patrolled the hot corner as well as anyone (again, no one mentions him as one of the better 3rd basemen of his day, not HOF by any means, but very, very good, until that snowmobile accident). Mike Gallego was a decent fielding second baseman, and they had three consecutive ROY (Canseco, McGwire, and the forgotten Walter Weiss -- Walt to those who love the game).

Man, this trip down memory lane has been great. Some of these names I haven't uttered in YEARS. Those, and Michael Jack Schmidt are the superstars that got me to love the game.

            Thanks, Dad.

And I'm born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA -- northeastern PA. Just saw them on TV a lot, and LOVED it when they swept the Yanks in the season series, 12-0 , in 1990.

                No I'm Canadian.

I'm from St. Catharines, Ontario, about ten minutes from Niagara Falls and 90 minutes from Toronto, depending on traffic.

I hale from Washington State, but didn't follow baseball till 98 when my 16 year old sister took me to a Yanks Mariners game at the Kingdome. Yanks won, with Irabu on the mound. That was a great year for baseball, and I've been a baseball fan eversince. I've stayed a Mariners fan because of my sister, and because that's my homestate, even though I've been in Chicago 17 years.
I am always glad when the Mariners come to town. I usually try to make all the games, if I can, but I dislike the comments I receive from Sox fans. I look forward to the day when the Mariners come to Wrigley.....that'll be weird.

I'm a Red Sox fan first and foremost, since I've lived in MA my entire life, but I'm also a Reds fan. Even though I've never visited Cincinnati, and have never seen a Reds game, I started following Sean Casey a few years back, and he soon became my favorite player. Although he's no longer with the Big Red Machine I'm also a big fan of former Reds players like Perez, Bench, Morgan, and Larkin, and other current players like Griffey and Dunn, so the Reds are still my NL team.
"Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms."

How bout Kearns? Pena? And my favorite, Freel. I wish I could have seen those 5 stolen bases. I also wish I had had him playing, instead of on the bench! arrggh!

Like the Big C wrote "WGN" (and to a less extent TBS) were the only 2 stations that had ML baseball. I didn't like the Braves for some reason, maybe because Harry Caray was really interesting. Other than that I only watched games on Saturdays and the Post Season. The only way to get BB news was TWIB and the Sporting News. Later in life I spent time on and off working in Chicago. I went the Wrigley every chance I had.

I slowely became an Angles fan because we have the Angels AAA club the Salt Lake(SL) Bees, formerly the SL Stingers. I love when Iowa comes to town, which I think is every 2 years. Last year I had a chance to see Todd Walker and Joe Borowski play, both on rehab assignments. I've watched Figgons and Vlad come up through the system while playing in SL. I've always been an Adam Kennedy fan.

BTW the record for the most consecutive wins by a professional baseball team belongs to a Utah single A team the SL Trappers http://www.brainyhistory.com/events/...87_160215.html

Nice post it's fun to see the reply's.

                          Hey Sickle

Hey Sickle I spent a lot of time in your neck of the woods, actually Hazelton PA and the Redrock area. Beautiful place.

I was born and raised in California and my Mom and I would go to a lot of San Diego Padres games and I became a fan of theirs. When my Mon married my Step Father who is from Boston he would send me to Boston for part of the summer to live with his Aunt and because of this I became a Red Sox fan as well as a Padre fan. I still live in San Diego and follow both teams the Red Sox by reading the Globe online every morning and watching their games on the satellite at the local watering hole ( lots of Boston transplants are also regulars) and also going to a few road games and one trip to Boston each summer. As to when the two teams face off I am the happiest person on earth watching my two favorite teams play and pleased with the outcome either way. I was in Fenway for the interleague match up in 2004 and at Qualcomm for the 2002 series. As long as it is not in the World Series, I don’t know how I would handle that.

Same here... Growing up in Seattle, I saw some miserable baseball in the mid 80's. I started following the A's in about 1986 and have stuck with 'em ever since.
